DEAR DR LAMB - I am
31 years old and I have es-
ophagitis. I have had an es-
ophagoscopic examination
and my doctor told me the lin-
ing of my esophagus is inflam-
ed He told me to go on a bland
diet, no tea or coffee I don’t
drink or smoke.
I take antacids all day long.
I still have pain below my
breastbone and burning most
of the time. This has been go-
ing on for about the last year.
I take diet pills to keep me
from getting so hungry. I
haven’t lost my appetite. And
if I don’t take the diet pill I
end up bating mere and then I
am even sicker I’m 5 feet 2.
Nine months ago I weighed
136 pounds. I weigh 116 now. I
look better now than I have in
years but I don’t feel better, is
there anything else I can do to
get over this? If not. how long
can the esophagus take this
before it turns into something
else?
DEAR READER - Why
are you so obsessed, with los-
ing weight? While you have an
inflamed esophagus is not a
good time to do that.
I am sending you The
Health Letter number 4-8,
Hiatal Hernia and Esophageal
Reflux. I doubt you have a
hiatal hernia but you may
have a leak of your stomach
contents in to your lower es-
ophagus anyway. That is how
the acid contents get into the
esophagus to irritate it and
cause the inflammation. Try
to follow the principles outlin-
ed in that letter and it may
help relieve your symptoms.
Others who have hiatal hernia
and similar problems and
want this issue can send 50
cents with a long, stamped
self-addressed envelope for it.
YoU are hurting your es-
ophagus with those diet pills

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for
46 years, and not once has he bought me a gift or flowers.
On special occasions when he thinks I should have a
greeting card, he hands it to me in the same paper sack
from the store where he purchased it. When I ask him
what it is, he says, “Open it and you’ll find out." And when
I do, I find a plain card without his signature or my name
on it.
I have told him repeatedly that if he can’t take the
trouble to put my name on the card and sign it, he
shouldn’t bother getting me one.
My birthday just passed, and that morning he told me
that if I was going out, to buy myself a card. I told him I
wouldn’t do it, so when he came home, he handed me
another unsigned card in a paper sack.
As I write this I’m not on speaking terms with him. Can
you blame me? He is so inconsiderate and thoughtless. Are
there other husbands like him? I doubt it.

DEAR ABBY: We built a lovely patio, bought furniture
and a grill, and planned for a pleasant summer. But
whenever we cook out, two neighbor children come over,
stand around and watch us eat!
Once I gave them each a slice of watermelon and told
them nicely to run along home, but they came back with
some other children, forming a ring around the grill and
remarking on.how good the barbecued ribs smelled!
I like children and don’t want to be unkind or petty, but
our budget can't be stretched to feed more than our own
family. Shall I call the mother and explain how
embarrassing this is? Or move?
DEAR UNHAPPY: It will probably be small consolation
for you to learn that I‘v heard from hundreds of women
who would be thrilled if their husbands bought them a Barbs
