your uterus removed. Some
, of the other complications?
such as the slight increase in
risk for heart attacks or .
blood clots, are made worse
by smoking. I wish you
would quit smoking, any-
way, but it might be well to
stop if you have to take
hormone pills.
But keep in mind that
unless your ovaries are also
removed you will not have
any real need for hormones.
If your ovaries remain
undisturbed, all the other
questions that you asked,
such as hair growth,, hot
flashes and so forth, really
aren’t important because ‘
you’ll be normal in all
respects.
. You will not have an ex-
cessive tendency to gain
weight any more than any
other woman.
Of course, you will have
the pain and discomfort
which follows any major
surgery, but that should be
temporary.

DEAR POLLY — I want to pay my dues for the many
helpful hints I have received from the column by sending in
a few Pointers I have gathered through the years.
One-fourth teaspoon baking powder added to the flour in
pie crust makes it flakier. I also spread a bit of soft
shortening on the crust after fitting it in the pan.
Sliced potatoes will stay white if a little milk is added to
the water they are put in. Add a bit of salt or vinegar to the
water for sliced apples.
Wrap green tomatoes in newspaper and put in a dark
place. They will ripen beautifully. I number them
according to ripeness and check every few days. They
ripen faster when there are a few specks of red on them. —

DEAR POLLY — If you need some strong, inexpensive
wrapping paper open up one or more large grocery bags or
cut them open at the glued seams, turn Inside out, cut off
what was once the bottom of the bag and wrap a package in
the paper For larger packages use as many bags as
necessary.
, I have limited space available for hanging dish towels so
I pull them through drawer handles on the cupboards.
They will dry if damp and are pretty when hung up folded
to fit inside the handles. Use one towel per handle. —

DEAR POLLY — Why buy those expensive stained
picture frames and wood placques when you can stain
them yourself? It is not even necessary to use stain. Try
using paste shoe polish. Apply coats of the polish and buff.
Be sure to try a sample on the back of the frame to be sure
you have the desired color. — JEAN
DEAR POLLY — Do tell the lady with the sofa that
smells of cigarette smoke that I have always used gum
camphor. I often shave off a little and put it in a drawer or
closed area, with perfect results. A tablespoon of liquid
camphor in a quart of water can be used for dampening a
cloth that could be placed under or on the, sofa (be sure that
there is no danger of harming the upholstery ).
