Dear B'nai B'rith Betsy Rehabilitation Fund Contributor:
On behalf of the committee directing the B'nai
B'rith Betsy Rehabilitation Fund Campaign, we want to ex-
press our appreciation and that of the hurricane victims
for your generous contribution to the fund.
Proper etiquette calls for a prompt acknowledg-
ment of your contribution. It is now exactly two months
since this violent storm struck the Louisiana coast and
did such great damage in the New Orleans area. Our only
reason for delaying this acknowledgment is that we wanted
to be able to advise you of the manner in which the con-
tributions are to be distributed. Our local committee has
surveyed the situation thoroughly and, after many hours of
inquiry and discussion, has decided on two areas where the
unmet needs were thought to be the greatest.
Approximately 40% of the funds will be used to
purchase a mobile disaster canteen for the Salvation Army
Center in New Orleans. The only locally available unit was
quite inadequate and 25 canteens had to be brought in from
surrounding states. The new canteen will be available for
all types of disaster work, great or small, in the Gulf
Coast area.
The balance of the fund will be distributed to
assist those members of the New Orleans police, fire, and
sanitation departments whose property was severely damaged
by flooding. During the two to three day period that many
of these city employees were away from their families and
homes, protecting the property of others and participating
in vast rescue operations on land and water, their own
homes and personal property were left unattended. The more
fortunate members of these departments are providing the
labor for the repair and renovation of these homes. Our
fund will aid in providing the necessary building materials
and in the replacement of damaged belongings.
To all our B'nai B'rith members and friends who
participated in this campaign we say thank you for assist-
ing in this Mitzvah, which in addition to helping the
hurricane victims, we believe will also further the cause
of brotherhood.
Sincerely yours,
Irving I. Gerson Stanley H. Levin
