The Sage of Hinsdale to Make Gifts to
Chiengo Institutionm.
Chicago, July 7.—Daniel K. Pearsons,
tbs sage of Hinsdale, already famous
for hie munificent benefactions to the
small colleges of this country, an-
pounced last night that he would de-
vote the remainder of thia his 90th
year, to distributing among the vari-
ous educational and philanthropic in-
stitutions of this city his last mil-

He will round out the sum he al-
ways intended Chicago should havr,
and this will leave him a relatively
poor man when he celebrates hi® 90th
birthday. April 14 next. Mr. Pearsons
declined last night to indicate what in-
stitutions will benefit by the remainder
of his large fortune.
For virtually a quarter of a centurs
MY. Pearsons has devoted the major
part of his attention to the bestowing
of hi® money upon worthy public in-

away over $4,000,000. He will save only
enough to insure himself a comfortable

of more than 200 persons on a west-

The roadbed was found to be in a

alone and got past the danger spot. In

era! James and his associates at ths
time had a proposition pending before
the people of Abilene to build a short
line from here to Brownwood. With
Judge A. H. Kirby, who, with J. M.
Radford, was aiding me in the Internet
of the Santa Fe, I caled op General
James and his assoclates and laid the
matter before them and statd that it
was to the interest at Abilene ror the
banta Fe to build its line through this
city, winch was then proposed, rather
than for General James to build hi®
short line through the same territory
southward. After considerable effort
on our part we induced General Jamies
and his ansoclates to abandon the build-
ing of the line from Abilene southward
and they went westward. However,
before General James abandoned his
proposition here Chief Engineer Dunu
of the Santa Fe system came to Abi-
lene and designated th® right of way.
terminals, depot ground®, etc., for the
Santa Fe railroad through Abilene and
stated to Judge Kirby, Mr. Radford and
myself that if General James would
give up his project to build from here
to Brownwood, the Santa Fe would
commence immediately th® construction
of a line either from Brownwood or
Coleman Through Abilene to a connec-
tion with its line northward and that
we could make this statement to the
general public, which we did. Follow-
ing this a contract was drawn and ap-
proved by Mr Terry and Mr. Dunn,
signed by people in Abilene whom Mr.
Dunn required it to be signed by, and
this contract was turned uvei to an
agent of (he Santa Fe. who held it for
some time. After the contract was
signed General James located and com-
menced to build his raiirvad from Ros-
coe northward. As soon as Die build- ?
ing of the Roscoe, Snyder & Pacirici
was commenced by General James at
Roscoe the Santa Fe Railway company
returned to us the contract unsigned
by the company with the statement
that on account of the money market
the building of the road would be tem-
porarily delayed.
