Judith Reckner also reports that the First Lutheran Church in Temple has /,
a large, fragile book of records that are almost as old as the church.
She knows that they go back at least into the 1890s. Katherine Tice is
the historian for First Lutheran and is very cooperative. The address is:
1515 W. Adams Avenue, Temple Tx 76501.She also reports that St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2407 W. Ave. P,
Temple TX 76501, has book of old records from an early German Methodist
church that no longer exists. Although she has not seen that book herself,
there is a church member who will look up information for interested parties.

Saint Vincent College this
month celebrated its 140th
anniversary as well as the 200th
birthday of its first benefactor-King
Ludwig I of Bavaria.
The college, in western
Pennsylvania, was originally
established to educate the children
of German immigrants and to train
clergy for the German-speaking
people of the United States.
In its first years the college
received significant financial support
from King Ludwig, who also gave it
more than 300 works of art. While
most of the paintings are by lesser-
known artists, the value of the 197
works that remain in the college's
collection has been estimated to be
more than $1-million. Its primary
value today, however, is historic. An
official of Saint Vincent said the
collection "represents the influence
of Benedictine spirituality on
Germany since the Eighth Century."
To celebrate the anniversaries,
the college assembled a special
exhibition of 30 of the paintings,
which are being shown publicly for
the first time. The exhibition, called
"Gifts of a King-The Treasured Art
of Saint Vincent Archabbey," will
be open until early December.
Prince Luwtpold of Bavaria, a
great-great-great grandson of King
Ludwig I, attended the opening of
the show.Copyright 1987 German-Texan Heritage Society
