of Portland cement. To make sure
that you are getting good cement, buy
only a well-advertised brand if the
cement is not to be used immediately
on reaching the farm, store it in a
dry place. It is best to put it on a
wooden floor which is high enough
off the ground not to absorb moisture.
Most any one knows that when ce-
ment gets wet it cakes and thereafter
is useless.
Cement, sand and gravel are the
three ingredients used in the milking
of concrete. Broken stone, pebbles
and any other hard particles small
enough to pass through a one-fourth
inch mesh are classed as sand. The
sand should be sharp, free of vege-
table mutter, nearly free of clay or
silt and assorted as to size. Sand par-
tides of uniform size do not bind as
well as those of assorted sixes.
A variety of things may be used for
the coarse aggregate in concrete, but
gravel is preferred. If mixed with a
considerable amount of day, gravel
should be washed before it is used
as clay interferes with the binding.
The coarse aggregate may lie of par
tides of any size from one-fourth of
the diameter of the wall to be con
structed down to one-fourth inch. As
with sand the particles should vary in
size to bring about the best results.

the volume of the three when mixed is
only slightly greater than that of the

sand and cement sift in between the*

the concrete is to be put. For thin
