This $3,000,000 bond issue will double the tax of
$1.50 on the $1 00.00 valuation, and out of these 1 2 acres,
on which there will be $3.00 taxes, the pasture rental at
25c per acre, will be just enough to pay the taxes. There
is more of this pasture land than any other kind of land in
Matagorda County. I lowever, even our good agricultu-
ral land does not net on the average more than $2.00 per
acre over a period of 10 years, and the tax valuation on
that sort of land will be around $1 5.00 per acre, or six
acres to the $100.00. which makes the tax on that sort of
land for six acres around $4.00, while the income from
these six acres is only $1 2.00. which means that one-third
of the income from your agricultural land goes out for

Of course, if you want to vote a tax that will cost you
$8.00 for every dollar it costs the joy-riders, that is your
affair, but you know that concrete roads will not make
crops grow; that while a network of high-priced local
roads may help the automobile business, it will not fatten
cattle; and you know that a few fishermen and bathers
going down to Sargent and the Gulf of Mexico, and a few
hunters driving over from Houston to go to Collegeport,
will not add materially to your income.
