Seniors Reminded
About Deadlines
Seniors are reminded that
Saturday, April 1 is the deadline
for ordering graduation invita-
tions and name cards and for cap
and gown measurement. They are
also reminded that Monday, May
1, is the deadline for informing
the Dean of Men regarding the
number of guests attending the
banquet and noon meal on May
28. Because of inadequate facili-
ties only two guests may ac-
company each of the graduates to
the banquet, although additional
guests will be served a free din-
ner in the college refectory.
From Two Foreign
Countries, 9 States
Nine states and two foreign
countries will be represented in
the 1950 Graduation class of
Saint Edward’s University). Among
the more than fifty graduates are
residents of such far-flung states
as Massachusetts, New York, Cali-
fornia and Wisconsin. One grau-
ate Jaime Palacios is from Chile
Another, Oscar Eichelmann calls
San Louis Potosi, Mexico “home.”
In addition to Texas, the
graduates come from Illinois,
New York, Indiana, Kentucky,
California, Massachusetts, Wis-
consin and Louisiana. Fifteen Tex-
as towns are represented on the
class roster. Laredo with 12 grad-
uates has the most members of
the class. Austin and Houston
follow. Other cities represented
are Pasadena, El Paso, Beaumont,
San Diego, Schulenberg, Nord-
heim, Taylor, Tyler, East Ber-
nard, Marshall, Realitos and Mis-
sion.
Typical of the wide-spread area
of the home towns of the grad-
uates are the officers of the class.
Paul E. Baron, class president,
is a native of Lockport, Illinois.
Vice-President, Richard Gutierrez
is from Laredo, and William Grib-
ble, secretary and treasurer,
comes to Saint Edward’s from
Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Gribble at
the present time resides in Aus-
tin.
Saint Edward’s will present de-
grees to students of four college
Arts and Letters, Commerce, Sci-
ence and Engineering. Approxi-
mately fifty percent of the grad-
uates will receive degrees in one
of the three fields of the Com-
merce school—Business Adminis-
tration, Accounting and Econom-
ics.
About forty percent of the
graduates will receive degrees in
either Arts and Letters or Science.
This includes students now study-
ing in law and medicine schools.

degrees. The remaining ten per-
cent are Engineering graduates.
last year. Bishop Garriga also
holds a Doctor of Laws degree
from Saint Edward’s.
Commencement speaker will be
Governor Allan Shivers, a promin-
ent Texas statesman for several
years. A graduate of the Univer-
sity of Texas, Governor Shivers
was a Lieutenant Colonel in the
last war. He served in the Texas
House of Representatives before
being elected Lieutenant Gover-
nor in 1946. After Gov. Beauford
Jester’s death, July 11, 1949,
Shivers became governor. He will
also receive an honorary degree
of Doctor of Laws from St. Ed-
ward’s at the Commencement ex-
ercises. Governor Shivers is fa-
miliar to Edsmen since his ad-
dress at the Knight’s of Columbus
Silver Jubilee dinner in January.
He stressed the need of Christian
principles in government in his
talk to the Knights.
Also recipient of an honorary
degree of Doctor of Laws at the
commencement will be Mr. Wil-
liam L. Moody III, a prominent
Galveston businessman. The
Moody family has been active in
Texas since 1852, with interests
including banks, newspapers, ho-
tels, insurance and ranching. The
Moodys are currently building a
home for the aged.
Mr. Moody is a typical Texan,
and a good example of the energy
and boldness characteristic of an
American functioning in a free
world. Mr. Moody also plans to
