Polar Explorers Laughs
At Colorado Storms
LAMAR, Col. (UP) — When
Colorado’s wind and snow blow
into Lamar, 81 year-old George
Anderson just rubs the stump of
a leg and mutters, “I’ve seen
worse than this.”
Anderson, who has been in
southeastern Colorado almost
long enough to be called a pio-
neer, is really a pioneer, but not
of western America.
In 1895 and 1896, Anderson and
Dr. Fridtjof Hansen reached 86
degrees and 14 minutes north, the
nearest to the North Pole anyone
had ever traveled at that time. It
was 13 years later that the Amer-
ican Admiral Peary discovered
the pole.
Anderson came to Colorado in
the early 1900’s, after his work
for the Norwegian government
was finished. He lost his left leg
here.

Family Retains Grasp
On Legislative Seat
WAYNESVILLE, N. C. (U.R)—
When Grover C. Davis ran for the
state legislature, it wasn’t par-
ticularly because he loves politics.
The Haywood county seat in the
North Carolina house of represen-
tatives runs in his family.
Davis will be the fourth mem-
ber of the clan to represent the
county.
In 1846 his great-great-grand-
father, Andrew Ferguson, won the
seat. Grandfather F. M. Davis
took over in 1874. His father, J. S.
Davis, was elected to the post just
“I thought I had better run to
keep the family records straight,”
the latest legislator said.

Self-Cleaning Paint
Devised in Britain
LONDON (UP)—Engineers on
Britain’s railway lines can’t miss
the signals now. A new white
paint has been developed for sig-
nal posts that stays white in spite
of dirt and weather.
The self-cleaning paint, made
with a new pigment and other
materials which are being kept
secret, "shed" lawyers through-
out a process of '“chalking.” In
standard paint, the surface dis-
integrates and forms a powdery
residue which may be washed
away by rain.
While the disintegrating sur-
face of the new paint is washed
away by rain, a new layer is ex-
posed underneath. The process is
repeated until the paint has dis-
appeared entirely but no matter
how thin it wears, no discolora-
tion takes place.
