Brashear placed this epitaph for

We have loved the stars too
fondly
To be fearful of the night.
May we follow the star of the
long journey as well as the short
journey so that we may not be
afraid of the night.

CHRISTMAS UISHES
promise of a little child who will
redeem the world. The birth of
every baby has something of this
promise for its family and the
world. God entering the world
through the birth of a baby is a
wonderful though short journey.
It is a short journey from the
Christmas carols—“Silent Night,”
“O, Little Town of Bethlehem,”
and “Away in a Manger”—to the
greatest of all theological truths:
‘God so loved the world that he
gave his only begotten Son.” We
are privileged to make these short
journeys of the spirit but for
hose with deeper faith and greater
understanding there is a longer
journey of the spirit typified by
the journey of the wise men.
It is a long and hard journey
for us to learn that God loves and
saves all men who seek his face—
white, black, brown, red, yellow
men. It is a long and hard jour-
ney for us to realize that the hope
of the world is not in Herod or in
Caesar nor any who rely on force
—but the hope of the world is in
Christ who relies on the spirit.
When will we learn that salvation
and peace will come for the world
only through the Prince of
Peace! The long journey is the
hard journey, but it is the re-
warding journey.
John Brashear was a leading
astronomer and an expert maker
of lenses for giant telescopes. In
all his labors his wife was his
constant companion and co-work-
er. Many nights they watched the
stars together — they measured

The journey of mep’s spirits to
the manger of Bethlehem is
strangely like the journeys of the
shepherds and the wise men. The
Gospel of Luke tells of the visit
q of the shepherds while Matthew
.1 ’ tells of the wise men. There is
more contrast in their journeys
th than simply that they are told in
two separate Gospels.
When the shepherds heard the
n good news of the angel choir on
the hillsides of Bethlehem they
were but a short journey from the
, Stable where the young child lay.
It was a matter of a few minutes,
■ or an hour at most. The journey
1. , of1 the wise men, on the other
‘ hand, was a long distance, requir-
i ing many days, possibly weeks to
■ complete — across deserts and
mountains — a rendezvous — a
camel caravan — an uncertain
02 search. Possibly there was anoth-
1 ; er wise man, a fourth, as the
d 1 beautiful story by Van Dyke sug-
e ; gests, who failed to meet the oth-
9 ers at Borsippa as they began
H their quest. The contrast of the
long and short journeys to Beth-
lehem is a good one to help us un-
b derstand our own pilgrimage in
" spirit to the Christ child.
