was fulfilled, and the long ex-
pected Saviour was born in Beth-
lehem of Judea. But the world
was disappointed in Him, for He
was not the kind of Saviour that
they had expected or looked for.
They had expected Him to set up
a temporal kingdom, and by force
loverthrow their enemies. but He
reminded them that His kingdom
was to be a spiritual kingdom,
and steadfastly refused to resort
to force.
There is great danger that the
world once again be disappointed
Ln Him, because of failure to un-
derstand that He is and how He
s to save the world. There is no
magic about Christ or Christian-
ty. It is not the historical Christ
that was born in Bethlehem two
thousand years ago that can save
pur world today. It is rather the
spirit of the living Christ embod-
ed in the life of humanity. When

Christ Remains Today
Only Hope of the World
By MORRIS C. SMITH
Pastor, First Methodist Church
The announcement of the angels to the shepherds on the Judean
hills that first Christmas night was that “Unto you is born this day
in the ity of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Nearly
seven hundred years before that time the Prophet Isaiah had looked
forward to the coming of Christ, who would save his people. Today
the political, as well as the religious leaders of the world are tell-
ing us that Christ is the only hope of the world, that only Christ can
save our world. Once more the world, in a time of great crisis, is
turning hopefully and expectantly to Christ and Christianity.
Finally the" prophecy of Isaiah -
the spirit of Christ is embodied in
he life of an individual all preju- present.

dices, animosities, hatred, greed
and selfishness are driven from
that life. Whenever the spirit of
Christ becomes embodied in the
life of humanity, it drives out
those attitudes that create strife,
dissention and war.
At this Christmas season may
we, as individuals, open our lives
to the spirit of Christ, and as He
comes to abide in our hearts and
lives may all our prejudices, ani-
mosities, greed and selfishness
disappear. May we pray that the
spirit of Christ might come to
dwell in the life of humanity
around the world, driving out
those attitudes that generate
strife and war.
