Asks Return
Of Duck Bands
Duck hunters can aid Parks
and Wildlife Department biol-
ogists in collecting information
concerning the mallard duck
stocking program by returning
bands from any ducks which
they harvest.
Through a grant from the
pearl Brewing Company, one-
day-old mallard ducklings
were purchased and delivered
to the Parks and Wildlife
Management and Research
Station in Tyler where they
were raised to the age of
approximately three weeks
during the past summer.
The ducklings were then
released at 28 selected sites
throughout the state. A total
biologist with information
concerning the movements of
the birds.
Bands may be returned to
any local Parks and Wildlife
Department Office or be
mailed directly to the Austin
office.

|The Turkeys
Hunting season is here and
East Texas hunters are likely
to encounter wild turkeys in
several local counties as a
result of a turkey restoration
project being conducted by the
Texas parks and Wildlife
Department.
Officails of the parks and
Wildlife Department remind
hunters that the turkey season
is closed in most Kasl Texas
counties and. if not closed, it is
still illegal to take a turkey
from any of the release sites
Turkeys have been released
in Anderson, Bowie. Mont
gomery. Nacogdoches. Shelby
and Waller Counties. Of these
counties, only Shelby has a
turkey season but the birds
released on the 22.IKIO acre site
in that county are also com-
pletely protected by law
Wild Eastern turkeys, raised
at the Parks and Wildlife
Department's Management
and Research Station in
Tyler, are being released in an
effort to re-establish the turkey
¡it' East Texas. Given the
néeded protection and with
cooperation from hunters and
landowners. Biologists are
hopeful for a huntable popula-
tion in the future.
"Hunters who may have an
urge to pull the trigger if they
get a turkey in their sights may
want to remember the poacher
who shot a turkey shortly after
it was released." said a
Wildlife Department officer
