Mrs. Farmer To Serve Southland
AARP As New President Foundation
Winfred R. Hall, Assistant to
the State Director of the
American Association of Re-
tired Persons. Inc., installed
new officers for the Rusk
chapter of AARP during a
Christmas party Dec. 5 which
marked the final meeting for
the club this year.
Officers installed were Mrs.
Adeline Farmer, president;
Jos. E. A. Ross, first vice
president; Mrs. Mary Smith,
second vice president ; Jesse B.
Scoggins, third vice president ;
Mrs. Ida Fisher, secretary; W.
W. finley, treasurer and Mrs.
W. W. Finley, assistant
treasurer. Board members
installed were Mrs." Cora
Bruce, Alex Black, Bill
Shattuck and C. Metz Heald,
retiring president. Mrs. Farm-
er. president, will serve as
Chairman, of the Board. In a
brief address, Mrs Farmer
urged support from the
members for a successful
year
Following a covered dish
dinner, Mrs. Gerry Webb
Struhall presented a Chrislmas
story. The tables were covered
with white and Christmas holly
and red candles added to the
festive holiday spirit.
During a business meeting
Mr. Ross, chairman of the
Defensive Driving Course,
reported that 35 persons had
signed up for the course slated
for May 5-7 at 6:30 p.m. nightly
in the Educational Building of
First United Methodist
Church. "Cost will be $2 per
person plus $1 for a work-
book," reported Ross
A collection was taken for
the purchase of an enamel
roaster and a stainless steel
double boiler to be presented to
a ward at Rusk State Hospital.
Cake and punch were to be
served on the ward by
Mesdames Farmer, Lottie
Knapp, Ida Fisher, Cleo
Guenzel with assistance with
the refreshments from Mes-
dames Finley and Heald.
Thirty-nine members and 11
visitors attended the meeting
in the Fellowship HalJ of First
United Methodist Church.
Makes Grants
The Singletary Memorial
Library in Rusk is one of
dozens of charitable, educa-
tional, historical and medical
organizations in East Texas to
have received contributions
totaling nearly $50,000 from the
Southland Foundation.
The Foundation, administer-
ed by Southland Paper Mills,
Inc., distributed the grants
during 1975.
Groups that have received
the contributions are located in
Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Houston
Huntington, Diboll, Corrigan
Cleveland, Alto, San Augus
tine, Groveton, Kountze, Trin
ity, Crockett, Tyler, Jackson
ville, Shepherd, Livjngston
Conroe, Newton, Rusk, Hunts
ville, Coldspring, Center
Woodville and Wells.
The Foundation also paid out
more than $12,500 for four-year
college scholarships to chil-
dren of Southland employees in
East Texas and made grants to
a number of privately-
supported colleges in the state
