tists, including 7,000 Texans, are
expected to attend the world-wide
meeting in Dallas’ new Memorial i
Auditorium.
Graham will deliver the confer-
ence’s opening address Sunday
afternoon and will speak again i
Monday evening.
Nearly 100 pastors, missionaries
and laymen will participate in spe-
cial area meetings each afternoon
of the conference. Theme for the
conference is “Evangelism, At
Home and Around the World.”
The Rev. J. Walter Davis, pas-j
tor of the First Baptist Church in
Groom, will attend the conference.
The Rev. L. P. Ford of Pampa will
fill the pulpit at the Groom church
at the morning and evening hour
next Sunday during the pastor’s
absence.
The law allows a business a wide
choice of ways to set itself up, to
finance and manage itself.
You may have sole ownerships,
partnerships, joint ventures, cor-
porations; and within these classes
you have many different forms.
To meet modern business con-
ditions, to get full tax advantage,
and to protect investors, for ex-
ample, the law provides many
ways for a company to finance it-
self. And these, in turn, influence
the kind of management it can
have, and the way it conducts its
affairs.
We sometimes speak of “stocks
and bonds,” for example, as if they
were one and the same.
But when you buy a share of
stock in a company, you “own” an
“undivided” part of everything it
owns, but no particular piece of
its property.
But what do you have when you
buy a corporation's bond or de-
benture? You own nothing of the
company. Instead you are lending
money which it promises to pay
back with interest when your bond
■“matures.”
Unlike a stockholder, a bond-
holder as a rule has little to say
directly about who manages and
how he manages the company. Re-
motely a bond buyer by withhold-
ing or lending money may influ-
ence a company’s ability to ex-
pand. The bondholder gets only
his interest payments, which come
before the stockholder’s “divi-
dends,” since he takes less of a
risk than the stockholders.
Thus if the corporation quits or
goes bankrupt, it must pay the
bond-holders off before the stock-
holders get anything.
Where does the “preferred”
stock come in? As a rule, pre-
ferred stockholders collect a fixed
-dividend—after the bondholders
are paid but before the “common”
stockholders get anything. There
are many kinds of preferred stock
arrangements. But in return for
their first chance at the profits
the preferred stockholders often
give up any voting rights or abil-
ity to control the company direct-
ly.
