Mr. and Mrs,. Max Sherman of
Amarillo were visiting in Groom
Saturday and Mr. Sherman spoke
before the Groom Lions Club at
the noon luncheon meeting. His
speech was titled “An Optimistic
Look ■ at Youth." He discussed
guidelines for both the older and
the younger generations and en-
couraged them to work together.
Mr. Sherman is the Democratic
candildate for State Senator 31st
District of Texas.

AT ELEVATORS IN GROOM

4-H dolors, are likely to be noted
with regularity during the week of
Oct. 4-10. 4-H Club members in
Texas and the nation during this
period will be observing National
4-H Club Week.
Governor Preston Smith, in pro-
claiming 4-H Week, said “The pur-
pose of 4-H Club work is to give
equal training to the Head, Heart,
Hands and Health of Texas young
people and to help prepare them
to be better leaders and citizens
who will fit into the society where
their life’s work may take them.
“4-H is a part of the educational
program of the Texas A&M Uni-
versity Cooperative Extension Ser-
vice and is supervised at the local
level by county Extension agents
•along with the help of 16,000 local
volunteer 4-H leaders who are out-
standing men and women in the
local community.
“Texas 4-H members working
with educational learn-by-doing
projects, apply the latest research
and scientific information to their
work, keeping records, arranging
exhibits and giving demonstratons
to pass this information to others.
“The leadership and citizenship
training which 4-H members re-
ceive in this program is a valuable
asset to our democratic way of life.

in Ammarillo at a railroad crossing

The car, with five persons inside,
collided with a Santa Fe freight
train about 9 p.m. Sunday. Dead
at the scene were Travis R. Jolley,
40, and Woodrow Ronald Pool, 55,
both off Amarillo; Harold Edward
(Shorty) Tate, 39, and Mrs. Char-
lotte Bayliff, 27, 'both of Groom.
Bob Bayliff, 39, of Groom, husband
of the dead woman, is the only sur-
vivor of the accident and is in a
critical condition in St. Anthony’s
Hospital.
| Mr. Tate had been employed for
several monhs on the Art Britten
farm in Groom. Funeral services
I will be held Thursday afternoon at
Comanche for Tate.
