managers were recognized for their
excellence in grazing management
at the 1970 annual meeting of the
Texas Section of the American So-
ciety of Range Management in San
Angelo. Each is to be commended
and congratulated for their out-

Contracts for highway construc-
tion in the Amarillo district have
been awarded by the Texas High-
way Commission. The work will
be under supervision of District En-
gineer Charles W. Smith, and will
be in Carson, Gray, Ochiltree and
Randall Counties, and includes:
Gilvin-Terrill, Inc., of Amarillo
a contract for seal coat and hot
mix asphaltic concerete pavement
on 9.1 miles of SH 152 and US 66
in Carson and Gray Counties. Low
bid was $100,927.45.
The project is located from 1.0
mile east of Laketon to the Wheel-
er County Line and from 0.2 mile
east of the Carson County line to
2.2 mile west of the Groom city
limits. T. R. Kelly of Pampa is
the Highway Department engineer
in charge of the project which will
take an estimated 45 working days.

have installed cross fences, wells,
and water storage facilities for
better livestock distribution, con-
trolled brush and have carried out
proper grazing use as well as rest-
ing some pastures each year. Both
Coon Jeffers and Jay Pumphrey
have earned the right to be called
excellent grazing managers.

hour while Mrs. Donald L. Peters
of Sunray, cousin of the bride-to-
be, presided at the registry the ;

Presiding at the serving table
from 3 to 4 p.m. were Mrs. John
A. Kuehler of Amarillo, the bride-
to be’s cousin, and Mrs. James
Watson, Amarillo. From 4 to 5
p.m., Mrs. Ernest Weller and Mrs.
Bill Bohr served the refreshments.
Many guests registered during
the afternoon in honor of the oc-
casion and to observe the lovely
gifts. Three aunts of the bride-
to-be who were present were Mrs.
A. M. Kuehler, Amarillo, Mrs. John
R. Kimmins, Phillips, and Mrs.
Stanley E. Latta of Groom. Other
out-of-town guests included Mrs.
W. H. Scoggins, Mrs. Jim L. Scott
and Merlla Scott of Borger, Mi’s.
Jay Phillips, White Deer, Miss Mel-
va Asberry, Lubbock, and Misses
Mary Helen and Donna Marie Pet-
ers, Sunray, and Miss Tracy Kueh-
ler, Amarillo.
The groom-to-be, Mr. James K
Dowdle, and the father of the
bride, Mr. George H. Latta, drop-
ped in to enjoy the festivities at
the end of the reception.
Miss Latta and Mr. Dowdle will
be married Friday, April 9, 1971 at
6:30 p.m., at the 2nd Ward of thei

Donations are now being taken
by the Groom Cemetery Associa-
tion for funds to take care of the
cemetery gounds during coming
months. Mowing grass, removing
weeds, watering shrubbery is a
very necessary project during the
growing season and financial as-
sistance from every family in the
area is needed.
Each family in the community is
asked to donate $15.00 a year for
the 'Excellence in Grazing Manage-
ment Award.
Jay Pumphrey, general manager
for the S. B. Burnett Estate, was:
nominated from Carson County and
was one of the 45 to receive the
certificate for Excellence in Graz-
ing Management. He-was recog-
nized for the outstanding job of
management of the 6666 Ranch in
Carson County. Mr. Pumphrey is
headquartered in Fort Worth and
manages several large ranches.
Mr. Pumphrey has been greatly
helped by another outstanding graz-
ing manager, Geo. “Coon” Jeffers,
the foreman of this ranch. Mr.
Jeffers has been with the S. B. Bur-
nett Estate for many years and
does an outstanding job of manag-
ing their cattle and grassland.
