ance sale at our home, 501 Martin , -- ...... -h--
You’ve always seemed to have the
time to do the things that grand-
fathers were meant to do. You
always had a piece of gum and one
time a chew of tobacco. You’ve
measured me on the garage wall
from the time I was small until I
quit growing tall. You’ve swung
me many times; taught me to
whittle and doctored my finger
when I used your knife and wasn’t
supposed to.
You’ve got me out of a tree when
I wasn’t as big as I thought I was
and picked cherries for me when
I couldn’t reach them. You’ve
rocked me to sleep and let me fix
your hair; puff your pipe, and
blow out your matches. You’ve let
me help water your garden when
you really needed no help and let
me pick your green peaches. You
showed me how to play checkers,
marbles and dominoes. You’ve
taught me to drive and I don’t
know how you survived all the
bumps, starts, stops, and running
over the curb. We’ve been on
trips, to church and to the wres-
tling’ matches. You’ve told me
stories that happened long ago.
You raised the garage door for me
many times and shoveled me out
of the snow and we have eaten
honey and butter until it ran out
of my ears.
I’ve been around only a third
of your life, but you’ve always
(been a part of mine. And I can
never remember saying I love you,
even though I would hope you
know it. These are three words
never said enough and often taken
for granted. Only God knows
whether you’ll have your 110th
birthday or your 80th and I may
not be here in either case to tell
you that I love you, and, if God
judges men by the kind of lives
they lead as a grandfather, I know
your crown will ba among the
brightest.
Your granddaughter,
Kathy Collins Burgan
