To avoid delay in Medicare pay-1
ment, patients should file claims |
promptly after they get their doc-
tor bills, according to Travis
Briggs, social security district
manager in Amarillo.
“Many people let their medical
bills accumulate until the end of
the year and then file their claim.
This tends to create a clerical
backlog that can cause delays in
payment," Briggs said.
“Claims are filed on ‘Request
for Medicare Payment’ forms
available at most doctors’ offices
and at any social security office,
Briggs said. “Your Medicare
Handbook,” tells where claims
forms should be sent.
In most cases physicians submit
claims for their services under
Medicare themselves and are paid
directly by the Government.
Briggs said Dec. 31, 1971, is the
deadline for filing Medicare claims
for services rendered Oct. 1, 1969,
through Sept. 30, 1970.
“Under the law, Medicare can
pay medical insurance claims only
within a certain time after treat-
ment or other service,” he said.
“Alfter Dec. 31, 1971, Medicare
CANNOT pay on bills for services
rendered Oct. 1, 1969, through Sept.
30, 1970.”
Medical insurance is the volun-
tary part of Medicare. It is avail-
able to almost everyone 65 or over
and helps pay for doctor bills and
certain other health care services.
It is funded by individual prem-
iums that are matched by the Fed-
eral Government. It pays 80 per
cent of reasonable charges above
the $50 annual deductible for cov-
ered services.
Medicare hospital insurance,
funded through regular contribu-
tions to social security, requires
no premium payments. It helps
pay for hospital care and certain
related services for people 65 and
over.
Medicare is administered for the
Department of Health, Education
and Welfare by the Social Security
Administration.
