(Editor's note: The follow-
ing city candidates have
submitted to The Chero-
keean their .announce-
ments for publication. An
invitation was given in last
week's issue to all candi-
dates in the two elections,
scheduled April 2.)
Irvin C. Con ley
I am for progress and the
industrial growth of our
city, 1 want to be instru-
mental in helping to solve
the problems that will arise
in the future through
peaceful discussion and un-
derstanding. I am interes-
ted in the progress of all the
citizens of our city and we
must- live and work toge-
ther for the benefit of all.
I have lived in Rusk all
my life trying to do some-
thing for the benefit of
everybody.
If elected, I will do my
best to be the best council-
man to serve you. Your
vote is wanted and I will
appreciate the same.
Irvin C. Conley
Mr ■
I believe there is a way to
provide housing for anyone
desiring to live here; to
stimulate pruchasing wi-
thin the city, from which
everyone will gain; to im-
prove the street conditions
throughout the city; to
work closely with the
Chamber of Commerce and
other civic groups to reap
maximum benefits from
the expected flow of tou-
rists to the Railroad Park;
that concerned citizens,
working together, can ac-
complish these things and
more.
In the past, many people
have served commendably
in the position which I seek.
I am now soliciting your
vote that I may share in
this responsibility. If you
choose to elect me, I will
strive for an open mind,
that I may serve for the
betterment of the commu-
nity as a whole.
Earl C. Ross

My name is Karl C. Ross. I
have filed for a position on
the City Council because I
am vitally concerned about
the economic and social
progress of our commu-
nity.
1 have lived in Rusk and
surrounding communities
all my life. I recognize and
appreciate the benefits of
living in a small town, and
want to contribute what-
ever talents I may have to
enhance its economic
growth and development.

In announcing for a
place on the Rusk City
Council. I want to assure
all of you that I have no ax
to grind. My only reason
for running is to help Rusk
prosper, for I believe in the
next five years our future
will be determined. We will
either move ahead or gtay
at the same level as we
have the past twenty years,
in industry, building, and
retail trade.
,We live in a beautiful and
bountiful resource area; lo-
cated between Dallas,
Houston, Waco and Shreve-
port La...Why can't these
vast populated areas be
serviced with small in-
dustry from Rusk? I be-
lieve they can if factories
and industry can be recru-
ted to this area, five things
must be done to promote
this movement to Rusk.
1. Research to find the
right industry to locate
here, then actively recruit
them.
2. Offer suitable land and
market value or below
market value.
3. A tax break for a period
of time until business can
become established.
4. Find ways to help
finance.

5. Elect people to the
council who will work to-
ward this goal.
The results of this recuit-
ment effort of small indus-
try will be:
1. Increased jobs
2. Increased retail sales
3. Increased building
4. Increased population
5. Growth!
Our good neighbors to the
north have beert this suc-
cessful. Our city is almost
stagnant! Our growth is
negligible over the past
years.
For years our youth have
had to move from Rusk to
get into the job market.
Why not bring the jobs to
Rusk?
There are vast opportu-
nities here if we can only
work toward our goal, put
aside small petty differen-
ces and look to the future.
I want to serve on the
Rusk City Council! If you
will support me with your
votes and influence, I
pledge to you my full ef-
forts toward reaching our
potential in growth and
to listen to the voices on
how the citizens what our
city governed. I am backed
by no local organization or
cliques.
If you have any questions
on how I stand on any local
issue please call 683-2842.

I became concerned to
the point of filing for posi-
tion on the City Council
alter hearing repeatedly
that new state employees
could not find housing in
our city. Some are driving
from as far away as Nacog-
doches and Tyler because
of this problem. II elected,
I hope to encourage deve-
lopment of housing pro-
jects to the extent that
everyone desiring to live in
Rusk may do so.
I am also concerned
about the returns we re-
ceive from sales tax by the
Comptroller's Office. Why,
after payrolls for the area
have gone up 50 per cent,
has our city's returns been
so low? I think we must do
everything possible to sti-
mulate trade in Rusk. I
think the Rusk City Council
must take the lead in this
area by promoting ways of
attracting buyers to spend
their money in this city.
I am very much concer-
ned about the street condi-
tion in several areas of our
city, especially the south-
east and northwestern sec-
tions. Many, many dirt
streets exist in these hea-
vily populated areas. Busy
streets wind their way over
one-way bridges, under
railroad trestles, and in one
instance over a live
•stream, through water
where there is no bridge at
all. I think that any road-
way. alter being desig-
nated as a street, should be
developed by hard surfa-
cing. Citizen committees
from these areas should be
appointed to explore every
avenue of funding for street
projects and their recom-
mendations acted upon by
the City Council.
And last but not least, I
am concerned about the
welfare of all citizens, that
all get the proper protec-
tion to live unmolested and
move about freely; that the
children and adolescents
may have wholesome en-
tertainment; and that no
ordinance be passed that
would oppress anyone.
