Meet the Candidates 1 Conimitte? NameÍ To Plan
An election will be held
Saturday, April 5 in the
||ity Hall to choose three
■ councilman. To acquaint
voters with the persons
who seek the offices, the
following statements are
submitted by the
candidates.
As a candidate for City
Council for District 5 I
would like to take this
opportunity to share with
you some of my concerns
regarding our mutual
interests in the growth of
our city in the years to.
come. I feel that for Rusk
to prosper we, the people/-
must work together as a
whole and that the City
Council must work closely
with the Chamber of Com-
merce as well as other
community leaders instead
of in, separate directions.
As far as my personal
background, I am twenty-
nine years of age, married
to Joyce Berry and have
two children, Stephen, age
9 and Eric, age 4. I have
resided in'Rusk all of my
life and upon completion of
high school in 1968 I
attended Stephen F. Austin
State University where I
obtained a Bachelor of
Science Degree. After
graduation I was employed
at Rusk State Hospital as a
social worker for four
•years. I presently am self-
employed and co-owner of
^erry-Clay Building
Materials and Construc-
tion. Presently, I serve on
the Board of the Cherokee
County Community Wea-
therization Program for
* the Elderly and have
j recently been elected as
( one of eight new directors
to the Rusk Chamber of
Commerce.
1 would appreciate your
support in the April 5th
election.
DANNY BERRY
Travis McCain, candi-
date for City Councilman,
District 5, submits the fol-
lowing statement. I am 36
years of age; my wife is
Sandra and we have three
children, Torri, 12; Kristen
7 and Daniel 3. I am a
commercial contractor,
vice president and
treasurer of Hill-McCain,
Inc. I graduated from Rice
University with a business
degree in 1967.
We have lived in Rusk for
seven years and I have
been active in the follow-
ing: member of First
Baptist Church serving as
a Deacon and Sunday
School teacher; member of
Rusk Kiwanis Club, having
served as secretary, trea-
surer and president;
served as Board of Direc-
tors of Rusk Chamber of
Commerce as well as pres-
ident-elect and president in
1979 ; served as president
of the Elementary Parent-
Teachers Assocation; ser-
ved as Boy Scout Troop 323
Transportation Chairman
for the last three years;
served as co-chairman of
.United Way Fund Drive
1977-78; coached in Little.
League and Little Drib-
blers; named to Outstan-
ding Young Men of Amer-
ica in 1977.
I have enjoyed living in
Rusk and I would hope to
offer my services as a
business manager by ser-
ving on the City Council.
There is much building and
expanding to be done on the
sturdy foundations that
already exist.
Many people who work in
Rusk must commute
because of the lack of
adequate housing. This is
of special concern to me,
and I feel I could offer
assistance in this area.
Rusk is very fortunate to
have the Texas State Rail-
road located here. Many of

our young people have
found needed summer em-
ployment with the railroad,
but only the surface of the
tourism revenue has £een
tapped.
I would like to see more
recreational facilities for
the citizens of Rusk. I have
worked in athletic pro-
grams for our children, and
I feel more organized pro-
grams for teens and adults
could be accomplished in
much the same manner
The Civic Theatre has done
a great deal to create a
cultural climate in Rusk
that very few cities our size
will ever have. I would like
to see the city offer them
more support and assis-
tance in the future.
I have found Rusk to be a
fine place in which to live
and raise a family, and I
would hope if elected to
help preserve and streng-
then this unique atmos-
phere.
TRAVIS .VlcCAIN
My name is Harry S.
Tosh and I am a candidate
for City Councilman. I am
a retired businessman-
having been in the retail
building material and
home construction
business for some 30 years.
I am a veteran of WW 2 and
have served one term on
the City Council. I did not
ask for another term then
but now some things have
occurred that I think
should be changed so I am
asking for another term so
that I might try to change
them.
I am for a better, more
business-like, operation of
our City government. I feel
that our City should be
governed by our elected
officials that are respon-
sive to it's citizens-not by a
bunch of committees and
manager that are not
accountable to the people.
Some of our officials say
that they do not have the
time to devote to the City
business-I believe that if
they do not have the time
then they should not ask for
the job.
We all know how the
crime rate is increasing
and spreading out into the
small towns and rural
areas. Let's use the money
that is now being spent on
the City Manager's office
(a large part of all the City
taxes that we pay) to
improve and strengthen
our police and fire depart-
ments and for better, more
responsive, ambulance ser-
vice. They are the people
who will help us when we
have troubles.
If you, the people, agree
with my thinking then I will
appreciate your vote and
support THINK ABOUT
IT!

betterment of the commu-

learning skills such as drill
and ceremonies, marks-
manship. map reading,
tactics, military courtesy,

mittee that the application
for the building had been
mailed to the Texas Histor-
ical Commission in an
attempt to receive grant

of the Rusk Chamber of
Commerce, spoke to the
group concerning the pos-
sibility of building perma-
nent shed structures at the
National Guard Armory to
save on the cost of tent
rentals for the annual
event. Stovall reported that
he had met with Rusk City
Manager Ron Cox and
Water and Street Superin-
tendent Orville Johnson
concerning the possibility
of water and lights to the
sheds if they were built.
"Our chances of city co-
operation look good." Sto-
vall said. "We also discus-
sed clearing the wooded
area between the Armory
and the Lions Club Girls
Softball Field for parking
use."
The committee voted to
work with the Chamber in a
cooperative effort with
Stovall serving as spokes-
man.
In other business the
committee agreed to pay
the registration fee for
Cumby to attend the East
Texas Chamber of Com-
merce Tourism Convention
in Beaumont in May and
heard a report of the Dallas
Travel Show attended by
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nix-
son and Cumby.
It was also mentioned
that the April. 1980 edition
