And happy to join the Citizenship of Van Zandt County for the
Dedication of our magnificent New Court House of which we are all
so justly proud. It is our opportunity to join as one united group for
the greatest Celebration Van Zandt County has ever known and too, •
we are reminded of years that have come and gone—Old Friends
who have passed on. But we must know that the problems of Yester-
day are solved—Tomorrow looks upon a wider field and now we
realize the obligations that are ours together, to serve more effici-
ently.
The McGrain Motor Company of Grand Saline opened its doors
to serve Van Zandt County in Ford automobiles, parts, and service.
Today 22 years later, we are still a part of this grand old “Free
State and with the same automobile, under the same management,
in thesame house .... it takes service. Good service and honest
dealing for any establishment to last so long, grow so much, and
enjoy the good business that we do today. . . . We are happy today
that we are still a part of this great county of ours, and to be able to
celebrate with you this memorable occasion. To mix and mingle
with the good old Van Zandters and call it “Our” New Court House.

The Van Zandt County Federat-
ed Garden Club was organized with
approximately 60 members. It is
one of the most outstanding clubs
in the county, and has received the
distinction of being named one of
the most active clubs in the state.
Extensive beautification programs
have been carried out in each of
the towns, many communities, and
the club has continuously co oper-
ated with the highway department
in beautification work. The county
club is composed of subordinate
clubs, which are situated in the fol-
lowing towns: Grand Saline, Edge-
wood, Wills Point and Canton, to-
gether with a number of rural
clubs. The junior garden clubs of
the county are also sponsored by
Si
the county club. Officers are

W. B. Wynne, a charter member
also one of the founders of the
club, has been designated as the
Mother of the Van Zandt County
Club.
Mrs. W. L. Steed is chairman of
Canton’s Iris Garden Club that has
been responsible for the most out-
standing civic improvement in ard
surrounding the town since it’s or- j
ganization about three years ago. I
This Club was formed into a well
planned program with a definite!
purpose of creating civic pride in '
public enterprises and individual
surroundings.
Outstanding progress was made
the first year with Mrs. Paul Stan-
ford as president. A cemetery im-
provement project was featured.
The work and improvements that i
was done on this project was al-
most unbelieveable but the most
successful was their efforts in get-
ting the cemetery on perpetual
care basis.
The clu,b has under its supervi-
sion a municipal rose garden and
numbers of other attractive public
plantings. They have a working
Junior Garden Clulb with distin-
guished projects of their own.
Another outstanding feature of
the first year work was civic pride
created among the colored people.
The effectiveness of their interest
was remarkable.
The home beautification contest |
has been effective in the creating
of many homes and gardens in
Canton. These projects have been
made more extensive each year
with other work added. Mrs. M. C.
Foster and Mrs. L. W. Shoemaker
served as presidents of the Club
for a short time and Mrs. E. C.
Stovall was the retiring president
before the election of Mrs. Steed
and the outstanding feature of
work under her direction was a
move to get traffic light for pub-
lic safety on the highways enter-
ing the city.
Mrs. Steed was a wise choice to
lead this club to further progress.
She has worked with its commit-
tees and otherwise since its organi-
zation. She is civic minded, capable
and efficient.
