Spelling Champion Steve
Higginbotham of Wells
took top honors at the coun-
ty-wide contest of the
National Spelling Bee held
Thursday at Rusk High
School.
Allyson Beall of East
Side Elementary,
Jacksonville, was named
county alternate at the
spelling competition.
Higginbotham, who at-
tends the Wells school, will
go on to Regional com-
petition in Dallas. The
National Spelling Bee
finals will be from May 28
through June 1 at
Washington, D.C.
Participating in the
county bee were fifth grade
students from Rusk, Wells
and Jacksonville.

Leonardo da Vinci invented
the scissors.
Mildred Vermillion,
Rusk ISD fifth grade
teacher, began preparation
in November for the recent
county contest. After two
in-class elimination roun-
ds, Michelle Clay and
Pamela Joyce were
declared winners and
Melissa White was named
alternate.
Other students par-
ticipating in the county bee
were Rhonda Floyd, Wells ;
Emily Parsons, Jackson-
ville; and alternate Sharon
Stewart, Jacksonville.
Coaches of the spelling
teams were Mrs. Cheryl
Skipper, Wells; Mrs. Rosa
Cigainero, Jacksonville;
and Mrs. Mildred Ver-
million, Rusk.
Judges for the event
were Mrs. Eloise
Willingham and Mrs.
Freddie Dear, with Mrs.
Marcelette Broussard
calling for the competition.
Students qualified for the
competition by meeting
two requirements: eighth
grade level or below at the
time of their individual
school finals and 16 years
of age or under.
Highway Accidents Announced
The Texas Highway
Patrol investigated 17 rural
traffic accidents in
Cherokee County during
February, 1984 according
to Sergeant Sanders,
supervisor for this High-
way Patrol Sergeant Area.

These accidents resulted in
one death and five injuries.
The total rural traffic ac-
cidents for Cherokee Coun-
ty for this year is 33, which
have resulted in one death
and 17 injuries.
The 22 counties which
comprise Highway Patrol
District 6A have had a total
of 416 rural traffic acciden-
ts this year which have
resulted in eight deaths and
235 injuries.

A mistrial has been
declared in the murder
trial of Joel Lowry, 19, who
has been charged with the
June 3 shooting death of his
wife, Jane Moody Lowry,
21, at their home near Alto.
The case was tried in Judge
Morris Hassell's 2nd
Judicial District Court at
Rusk.
The jury began hearing
evidence March 19 and the
trial continued until Mon-
day morning when five
jurors declared they
thought Lowry was not
guilty for reasons of in-
sanity. The other seven
jurors voted that they
thought he was guilty as
charged.
District Attorney Charles
Holcomb says he plans to
retry the case, which
probably will be put on the
docket for this summer or

April 12 For

An information meeting
for MOD-Rehab has been
set for 7 p.m. April 12 at the
Rusk City Council Cham-
bers, according to Virginia
Jones, ex-director of the
Rusk Housing Authority.
Mrs. Jones says that all
property owners and lan-
dlords interested in par-
ticipating in this program
are encouraged to attend
the session.
This is one of the better
rent assistance programs
and Mrs. Jones says all
those who deal with the
progra/n should make their
plans to be in attendance at
the meeting.
