Leap Year
Caesar started it. He revised
the calendar in 46 B. C. to fit
it to the time elapsing each year
which is exactly 365 days, 5 hours,
48 minutes and 45.1 seconds. In-
asmuch as a year is approxi-
mately 365% days long, Caesar
decreed the fraction should be
taken care of by adding a day to
the calendar every fourth year.
There was a slight error in his
calculations and the calendar was
ten days ahead of astronomical
time by A. D. 1582, when Pope
Gregory righted the mistake by
advising the omission of Leap
Year at the end of each century,
except those divisible by 400.
Since then our present calendar
has been known as the Gregorian
calendar.
The Leap Year rights of wom-
en rest on a more solid founda-
tion than tradition alone. Scot-
land passed a law in 1288 fining
any single man one pound for re-
fusing the marriage offer of a
maid, unless he could prove he
Was engaged. The fine, equal to
$5, marked the offense as a mis-
demeanor, in a class with drunk-
enness and disorderly conduct. A
tew years later a similar law was
passed in France, and before
Columbus sailed for America, like
measures were added to the stat-
utes of Genoa and Florence.
| It has puzzled persons born on
F ebruary 29 as to when to cele-
brate their birthdays in other
years. This problem was settled
in the reign of Henry III of Eng-
land, who caused it to be written
into the law that February 28
be the legal birthday in years
when February 29 did not occur.

The aptrons of the local school
district are invited to visit the
Canton schools during Public
Schools Week, March 5-9.
Our schools can be dynamic
and go foiward only to the de-

appreciates, and feels a part of
the school program, feels that it
is "Our School” instead of "Their

By visiting the school, the pa-

good that is being done in our
schools but also express opinions
as to what they believe needs to
