Be sure to take your social
security card with you. The
number on it is the key to your
benefit payments. Don't rely on
your memory or anything else.
The number has to be accurate.
Take last year’s W-2 form or
tax return and be sure you know
how much you have earned this
year There may not have been
enough time for your earnings
last year and this year to get on
your official record so the local
social security office will put
them on record for you if you
bring evidence of them.
Next, bring something to
prove your age. Best evidence is
an original birth certificate (not
delayed) or a baptismal record
made before you were age five.
If you don’t have either of these
records, try an original family
Bible where your parents en-
tered your date of birth, an old
insurance policy, an early
school record, a marriage
record, or early census record.
If you have more than one of
these records, take them all.
Generally, the older the record,
the better it is.
Guy said it generally takes six
to eight weeks to process a
claim for benefits, but it might
take longer if you have to secure
this information after your
claim is filed Call 593-2474 or
visit the office at 105 West Front
Street if you want more in-
formation on how to speed up
vour claim.

High school dropouts who
enter the service may return to
get their diploma under the GI
Bill, according to Jack Coker,
manager of the Veterans Ad-
ministration Regional Office in
Waco.
The VA will pay veterans up
to $130 a month (if single and
they are fulltime students—
more if they have dependents).
Those attending adult evening
school will be enrolled at half-
time rate.
These payments will not
reduce their college or on-the-
job training benefits, Coker
said.
A number of colleges and
universities have embarked on
new programs for returning
veterans who do not possess a
diploma but do desire a higher
education. However, such
veterans must meet certain
qualifications established by
the institutions and the VA.
Upon discharge, veterans
should file at the nearest VA
office for certificates of
eligibility even though they may
not use them immediately. This
will save time when they later
apply for schooling or on-the-job
training.
The VA manager also
reminded veterans who wish to
become policemen or firemen
that there are benefits under the
GI Bill for these approved
courses.
