these are daily floor care sug-
gestions. They don’t take much
time, but on the other hand,
they'll save considerable time
and effort if they’re done regu-
larly.
I think many of us are confus-
ed from time to time by all the
different types of floor care pro-
ducts on the market. Look in
the household services of any
supermarket and you’ll see why
confusion is understandable, es-
pecially when the housewife
doesn't know exactly what she’s
ldoking for.
Generally speaking, we have
three kinds of floor care products
. . . and these can come in either

self-polishing, while others re-
quire buffing to produce the high
shine some housewives prefer.
They come in different forms
and in a wide variety of price
ranges. Some are more difficult
to apply than others. They come
in either a paste or liquid form.
Most waxes, however, can be re-
buffed two or three times be-
tween applications to restore the
shine to some extent.
The third type of floor care
product — called finishes —
should not be confused with
waxes. These usually leave a
glossy finish upon drying without
the need for buffing. They are
much easier to apply than waxes
and to restore gloss to the floor
after the finish has dulled, you
simply reapply the finish in that
spot.

It is our opinion if we were to
' conduct a survey to determine
which chores housewives dread
the most, the task of cleaning
I and polishing floors would cer-
tainly be among those most fre-
I quently mentioned. Over the
I years, many of us have adopted
I a time-honored ritual in caring
I for our floors that goes some-
I thing like this:
Starting with a dirty floor, we
I begin by removing scuffs and
I spots from spills. Then we get
I some sort of cleaner or soap
I powder, put it into a pail of wa-
I ter and scrub with a brush or
I sponge mop. After this, we have
I to wait at least an hour for the
I floor to dry before applying wax
I or polish, and the entire area
I must remain off limits until it
dries completely. Doesn’t sound
I too pleasant, does it? And yet,
I it’s something we’re all to famil-
I iar with. I thought we might do
I well to discuss this matter of
I floor care today. There are a
I number of points worth raising
I that will allow us to do a better
job with our floors in a shorter
I time,
I Obviously, the problem of pro-
I per care is greatest where foot
I traffic is heaviest and this would
I have to include the kitchen,
I bathroom and hallways. Now in
I most cases, these areas will have
I what we call smooth-surfaced
I flooring . . . materials like lino-
I leum, floor tiles, and the newer
I vinyl materials. Next to their du-
| rability, the primary advantage
I of these floors is their ease of
I maintenance. So if you have had
I some difficulty in keeping these
I clean and bright, it may well be
I that you’re going about the job
in the wrong way.
I As basic as they may seem,
I there are three simple rules to
I daily floor care — if any of the
11 three are neglected, however, this
I can be what’s leading to your
I floor maintenance problems.
I Here are the three points . . .
I First, and probably most impor-
I tant. remove loose dirt. In most
I cases, all you’ll have to do is to
I go over your floors with a broom,
I dust mop or vacuum cleaner.
I This removes dirt and dust parti-
I cles before they have a chance
I1 to scratch your floors or become
ground in.
j Secondly, wipe up spills as they
occur. If you do spill something
or the baby pushes something off
his high-chair, wipe it up imme-
diately before it begins to hard-
en.Itn jus take seconds at ttie
I time, but can sava you e gsamt
I deal of toil.
j Thirdly, sponge up spots. If
you miss a spot during the day
and i hardens, remove it with a

liquid or paste form. The three
are cleaners, waxes and finishes.
We may do well to explain a bit
about each.
First of all we nave the clean-
ers. These are just what the
name implies. They are cleaning
solutions that remove ground in
dirt and soil from smotth-surface
flooring an dsimilar surfaces like
those on kitchen appliances,
bathroom fixtures, painted walls
and woodwork. Cleaners don’t
put any sort of protective coat-
ing on the floors — they just
clean them. As a matter of"fact,
certain harsh cleaners can actual-
ly cause damage to the flooring
materials.
You apply the second type of
flor product after you’ve used the
cleaner. 'Phis is wax. Waxes leave
a protective and glossy finish on
the floors. Some of these are
damp sponge. cloth or ]
Thene, in most cases, will
spots caused by spilled foed
dirty shoes.
