Dry weather continues to be
the subject of people when two or
more of them get together. Three
weeks ago Edom and Ben Wheel-
er got a good rain (3 to 5 inches)
and the water level in some ponds
in that area actually rose two to
three feet. Van Zandt is in criti-
cal need of “run off” water to
fill stock ponds.
Bob Murdoch, manager of the
East Texas Fair, Tyler, will speak
to the Van Zandt Fair Associa-
tion Monday night, Dec. 14, at 7
o’clock at a “Dutch” supper at
the Service Cafe in Canton. This
announcement was made by
Charles Branton, president of the
Van Zandt Fair Association. Mr.
Murdoch will speak to the Van
Zandt group on “Improving Your
Fair.”
Fifteen people attended a plan-
ning meeting of the “Free State
Farm and Ranch Club” Monday
night, Nov. 30, in the assembly
room of the courthouse. Purpose
of the meeting was to make plans
for the first organizatinal meet-
ing of the new club, and review
the proposed constitutions and
by-laws to govern the club.
There was another meeting
night, Dec. 7, of the Membership
and Program committee to make
further plans for membership in
the club and plan programs for
each month in 1965. Monthly ed-
ucational meetings will be held.
Programs have been arranged
by the program committee for
the first two meeting of the club
Steaks 75’ «
in 1965. Dr. A. N. (Tony) Soren-
sen, animal husbandry depart-
ment, Texas A&M, will speak at
the first meeting on Jan. 26. Dr.
Sorensen will talk on "Function-
al Efficiency of Beef Cattle.”
Functional efficiency is a system
used in selecting breeding cattle
based on external characteristics.
This system was developed by Dr.
Jan Bonsma, University Prae-
has been working with Dr. Bons-
ma since Bonsma has been in
Texas. Sorensen will use slides to
illustrate his talk.
Dr. N. D. Morgan, American
Potash Institute, Shreveport, La.,
will discuss “Spring Pastures-
Get Ready” at the Farm and
Ranch Club’s second meeting on
February 23.
Those nominated for officers
of the New Free State Farm and
Ranch Club are president, Truitt
Fulgham, Ben Wheeler; first vice
president, L. W. Reeves, Edge-
wood; second vice president, Jake
Slaughter, Canton; secretary-
treasurer, Leonard Bums, Can-
ton.
Directors nominated are Bill
Bass, Martins Mill; A. W. Hull,
Van; Kenneth Berry, Grand Sa-
line; L. L. Howell, Edgewood;
