. "Won't you please help us spread the ‘safety word'," cry the
eight national winners of $500 General Motors Scholarships for
outstanding 4-H safety activities. "We would like everyone to
hear more about this life-saving subject."
Promoting safety is almost a full-time job for these young
people. Typical of the eight winners is Gwendolyn Zeigler, 17,
of Rincon, Georgia. Extremely active in her community, she
has presented 157 safety demonstrations to nearly 6,000 people,
made many radio and TV appearances, written more than 30
newspaper articles and prepared innumerable safety posters,
Gwendolyn has also found time to organize safety clubs for
young people and conduct a community-wide fire extinguishe I
sale.

is preparing to take full advan-
tage of the opportunity to sell
its points of interest to the thou-
sands of people who will be trav-
eling Interstate Highway 20.
W’ithin two years after comple-
tion this great coast to coast four
lane highway will bring into
Texas millions of people, a good-
ly portion of whom will be tour-
ists sightseeing.
They will only be interested in
the 70 mile an hour road to get
them from one point of tourist
interest to another. Whether
they turn off to visit points of
interest will depend on how well
the points of interest have been
sold to them before they reach
the turn-off approach to that point
of interest. Interstate 20 will
pipeline these tourists through
our area. It is up to us to inter-
est them in what we have to
show.
Interstate 20 can be a great
asset or a tremendous handicap,
depending on how well and quick-
ly we prepare to take advantage
of our opportunity.
Harrison, Gregg, Morris, Up-
shur, Wood, Van Zandt and Kauf-
man counties have much to show
but we will have to glamorize
our respective poists if we draw
tourists through our area.
A bref description and history
of each attraction must be pre-
pared and placed in the hands of
each tourist entering Texas on
Highway 20 telling him where to
leave Highway 20 Signs appro-
priately placed should guide them
to the spot. Proper identification
of the point should be available.
The Mineola Chamber of Com-
merce displayed great foresight
when they endorsed a program
aimed at opening up the Salt
Mine at Grand Saline again to
tourists and school science class-
es. This great underground area
with its mle of Jeep roads and
large theatre area 750 feet below
the ground, plus the only natural
salt crystalization bed available
to scientists, makes this project
of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver E. Dear-
ing of Route 2, Canton, is par-
ticipating Feb. 23 to March 12 in
a major fleet training operation
called "Silver Lance" off the
coast of California while serving
aboard the attack aircraft car-
rier USS Midway.
The operation, under the direc-
tion of the Commander of the
First Fleet, is providing extensive
training in every facet of Naval
amphibious warfare. Participat-
ing units are receiving training in
strike anti-submarine, mine and
countermine, anti-air and elec-
tronic warfare.
"Silver Lance" involves more
than 60 ships and 50,000 Navy
and Marine Corps personnel.
During the operation, aircraft
from the Midway is flyng strike
missions and providing close air
support for Marine sea assault
forces.
