DETENTION HALL
WILL BE HELD
One of the many innovations
at Canton High School this year
is the detention hall. Its purpose
is to eliminate the excessive
number of tardies and unex-
cused absences.
During the past school year of
1970-1971 the number of tardy
students averaged ten per class
period, thus showing a need for

HELP KEEP OUR
CAMPUS CLEAN
As many of you may have
noticed, there has been an
excess of rubbish on the Canton
High School campus this week.
It seems that a lot of people
have become very careless
about the way they throw away
their trash.
The announcement was made
by Mr. Taylor on Tuesday that
if the cans and papers continue
to appear on the school yard,
the students will no longer be
allowed to go to their cars
during lunch.
The janitors have plenty of
work to do without having to
pick up after us. We should be

Editorial
The Student Council extends a
friendly welcome to everyone
this new school year. We need to
get acquainted with all the new
students and make them feel at
home.
The Student Council is a link
between the student body and
the faculty. The Council
presents the ideas of the
students to the faculty. If these
changes or revisions are ap-
proved, the Council then sup-
ports their enforcement. The
Student Council does not have
the authority to govern the
policies of our school. The
Student Councils of Texas are
sponsored by the high school
principals. Mr. Taylor's word
will be final with our council.
The Student Council will be a
great help to CHS if everyone
works together. Keep this in
mind!— David Mallory.

Living Textbook
The need to discuss current
events in the classrooms has
been felt by Mrs. Birdwell. Her
History classes will be using the
“Living Textbook Method”
sponsored by the Tyler Morning
Telegraph. This method is being
used by many East Texas
schools but this is the first time
it has been put to use at Canton
High School.
Each student in Mrs. Bird-
well’s United States History
classes and history classes will
be given a Tyler paper each
morning at the beginning of
class and will have ap-
proximately ten minutes to read
the article. After the students
finish their reading they will be
given five to six minutes for
discussion involving the
students and teacher.
Every Monday the paper will
have a test asking questions
about the information given the
week before. The students in-
volved in this “Living Text-
book" study will then discuss
