Troup Matches
The Canton Boxing Club
brought home nine trophies
from the Troup Boxing
Tournament held Friday,
Saturday afternoon and
Saturday evening, Jan. 17 and
18, at the Troup High School
gymnasium.
In the Canton Junior High
Division, nine year old Henry
Grimes, 65 pounds, won his
first fight against Scott Frost,
65 pounds, of Groveton.
Larry Rosemond, 65 pounds,
won over Tony Barton, 65
pounds, of Troup. Rosemond
and Grimes fought for the
trophy and Rosemond won it.
Ten year old Jimmy Dailey,
75 pounds, lost to 14 year old
Brad Hanson, 75 pounds, from
Mineola,
Saturday afternoon Donnie
Weilder, 70 pounds, lost a split
decision to Dennis Williard, 70
pounds, of Troup, and Dyrike
Shaw, 90 pounds, won over
Jeff Hale, 90 pounds, of Tyler.
Saturday night Shaw won his
fight with Byron Payton, 90
pounds, of Troup. Payton had
beaten Shaw twice in earlier
tournaments.
Douglas Knox, 95 pounds,
lost his first fight against Lee
Furlow, 95 pounds, a more
experienced boxer, from
Tyler.
Joe Rosemond, 60 pounds,
lost a contested decision to
Steve Oakes, 60 pounds, of
Troup Saturday afternoon.
In the Junior High
Heavyweight Division,
Howard Griffin, 200 pounds,
won his first championship
fight over Bill Sturdivant, 220
pounds, both of Canton.
The Canton High School
Division won the team trophy
for having won more fights
than any other team. Chase
Elliott and Roger Hall were
unable to participate. Cleve
Bishop, 139 pounds, won by
default over Jeffrey Smith,
139 pounds, of Jacksonville,
then lost a championship fight

Steve Spencer, 147 pound
welterweight, in his last high
school division fight, defeated
Terry Saxon, 147 pounds from
Tyler, then drew Mickey
Groom, 147 pounds of Tyler in
the championship fight. With
this win, Steve moved up to
Novice Division, and added
another trophy to his growing
collection.
Greg Galloway, 125 pounds,
lost to Dave Barron of Troup
in a championship fight.
Larry Thompson, 220
pounds, and Tony Melton, 165
pounds, were unable to get an
opponent in the East Texas
area.
Jesse Gonzales, 112 pounds,
and Tony Hammac, 147
pounds, were entered in the
Novice Division. Gonzales
won his first novice fight
against Ricky Smith of
Jacksonville and a trophy.
Hammac also won his first
novice fight over Johnnie
Charearr, 147 pounds, of
Jacksonville. Canton tied
Rusk for the Novice Team
trophy but lost the coin flip.
Canton’s only Open Divison
fighter, Mike Creel, 230
pounds, lost to Lanell Brown
210 pounds, of Troup. Brown
was last year’s state finalist.
Coaches Burgess, Jerry
Rosemond and’ Marlon
Rosemond accompanied the
boxers to Troup and will take
them to Mineola for a
tournament to be held there
January 23, 24 and 25 in the
multi-purpose room at the
Mineola High School. Matches
accompanied by Mrs.
Kenneth Yancey. Mrs.
Yancey also played the
traditional music.
Mrs. Montgomery, the
bride’s mother, wore a floor
length blue dress with
matching accessories and a
corsage of red rosebuds. The
groom’s mother, Mrs. Mills,
wore a floor length dress of
coral with matching
accessories and a corsage of
red rosebuds.
At the reception, the bride’s
table was covered with a pink
cloth overlaid with white lace.
The centerpiece was made of
roses, carnations, starburst
poms and baby’s breath in the
bride’s colors of burgundy
and pink. A tiered cake topped
with wedding bells and turtle
doves was served by Miss
Elaine Ward and Miss Elaine
Norman served pink punch to
the guests.
The groom’s chocolate cake
was served by Miss Carol
Burns and Miss Ann Pool
served coffee.
Miss Pam Seale presided at
the bride’s register.
For the couple’s trip, the
bride wore a pink A-line dress
with matching accessories
and a pink carnation corsage.
They will make their home at
College Station upon return.
The bride is a graduate of
Canton High School and Tyler
Junior College. She is a
medical lab technician. The
groom is a graduate of Athens
High School and Texas A&M
University. He is a technical
engineer.

double ring ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
Montgomery and the groom’s
parents are Mr. and Mrs.
Bryan C. Mills, Jr. of Athens.
The bride wore a formal
gown of white sata peau. The
bodic e was empire and wide

yoke. A deep standup
Renaissance collar of silk was
edged to either side in narrow
Venice lace. The gown had
bishop sleeves, lace trimmed
cuffs and a paneled A-line
skirt. White lace encircled the
waistline. A cotillion back
formed an attached slipper
level train.
Complimenting the gown
was a mantilla veil of white
bridal illusion caught to a half
Camelot band overlaid in
Venice lace. A short
mini-mantilla fell from the
top of the cap over the long
cascade.
She carried a formal cascade
bouquet of pink carnations,
red roses, white daisies and
baby’s breath.
The vows were repeated
before a kneeling bench
trimmed with pink and
burgundy ribbons. An arch of
flowers and two
arrangements of pink tapers,
starburst poms and baby’s
breath in shades of pink and
burgundy completed the
wedding scene.
Miss Nancy Heard was
maid of honor. She wore a
floor length, princess styled
dress of deep burgundy, and
carried two long stemmed
pink roses adorned with pink
ribbon. Miss Cindy Ryer was
bridesmaid and her dress was
identical to that of the maid of
honor. She carried one long
stemmed pink rose adorned
with pink ribbon. Both the
maid of honor and the
bridesmaid wore coronets of
roses and baby’s breath in
their hair.
Serving as best man was
Emile Sendral of Lubbock and
the groomsman was Paul
Molter of Portland. The
ushers were Greg Minton and
Fred Asmussen, III of Athens.

Wedding Song” and “We’ve
Only Just Begun,’’
