Eagles took the kickoff and
drove to the 33 yard line, only
to lose it on a fumble. This
was about the closest the
team got to the goal line the
entire first quarter. The ball
stayed around midfield,
neither team threatening.
Fumbles and interceptions
dominated the second
quarter. Canton’s best chance
at scoring came in the final
minutes of the second period
of play. Anthony Bowman
blocked a Bulldog punt with
Charles McPherson covering
the ball on the 6 yard line.
Eagles, however, were unable
to convert, and the half ended
0-0.
After the kickoff, the ball
went back and forth several
minutes. With 5:34 remaining
in the third, Eagles finally got
on the scoreboard. Canton
took the ball on the Bulldog 30
yard line, following an
Edgewood punt. Mark
McWilliams went over for the
score, still standing. His try
for the extra point failed, and
the Eagles led 6-0.
Edgewood’s lone score
came about seven minutes
deep into the fourth quarter.
Their drive started on their
own 34 yard line with Canton
drawing a 15-yard penalty and
a pass interference penalty in
their march. Edgewood

Funeral Rites
Are Held For
J. L. Goodson, Sr.
Funeral services for Rev.
James Lewis Goodson, Sr., 69,
of the Carroll community
near Van were held at 4 p.m.
Sunday, September 14, in the
Willow Springs Missionary
Baptist Church with the Rev.
L. A. Goodson, Rev. C. W.
Brewer, and Rev. Mitchell
Goodson officiating.
Masonic graveside services
were held at the Haven of
Memories Cemetery under
the direction of Hilliard
Funeral Home of Van.
Rev. Goodson died
Friday night in his home
following a brief illness.
He was born in
Weatherford, but had lived in
Carroll twenty-two years. He

Oil Company. Rev. Goodson

Church.

Mrs. Alice Goodson of Van;
one brother, Lawrence
Goodson of Big Sandy; four

moved the ball to the four
yard line, then Melvin Shiflet
connected an aerial to
Richard Brown over right end
for a six pointer. Charles
Wilson, Jr.’s attempt at the
PAT kick was no good, and
♦he score stood 6-6.
Edgewood threatened again
on the 26 yard line in the
waning seconds of the game
with a field goal attempt, but
fell short several yards.
“Good team effort was
shown but there were too
many turnovers. Edgewood is
a good Class A team and by no
means do we feel this was an
upset’’, Coach Bob Waldman
said.
He stated that he felt the
blocking wasn’t as sharp as it
has been and needed work in
this area.
Mike Burns, Mike Norris
and Wayne Wright all had an
outstanding game, according
to the coach. “We’re not
disappointed in the effort the
team showed. It improves
each week and they are
continuing to give a good
effort,’’ he said.
