A peach orchard field day to
assist home orchard owners
in such things as pruning,
varieties, fertilizing, insect
and disease control will be
held Friday, April 14 at
Stanley Smith’s Orchard,
near Edgewood. The program
will get underway at 10:00
a.m. and will last until noon.
To discuss the subjects will
be extension specialists, Dr.
David Creech, horticulturist;
Dr. George Philley.
pathologist; and Dr. James
Robinson, entomologist. All
the specialists are from the
Research and Extension
Center, Overton.
Although the program is
planned for the home orchard
owner the commercial grower
can benefit from the1
information to be presented.
In addition to the above
subjects to be discussed there
will be a spraying
demonstration and the group
will tour the 20-acre orchard.
Smith’s orchard is a
demonstration that began
April, 1975 when 104 Dixie Red
trees, 12-14 inches were
planted. Since then, the
Loring, Keystone and Red
Glove varieties have been
added.
Peaches are becoming an
important economic crop in
East Texas. Professional
horticulturists have stated
that “East Texas is becoming
more like Europe, small
farms with intensive
culture.” The upland sandy
loam soils of Van Zandt are
ideally suited for producing
peaches for both “fresh
market” and processing.
Demand for fresh peaches is
very strong. This demand has
been strong for the past
5-years and the outlook is for
this demand to continue.
