The City of Groom felt a great loss on Monday
June 2, 1980 when the new Interstate 40 bypass was
opened for interstate traffic. For many years Groom has
profited greatly from the trade of I-40 tourists. Now,
with the traffic over half mile from local businesses,
other towns are profiting at our expense.
This is not the first tragedy that has affected
Groom. In April the Groom Memorial Hospital closed
its doors after 19 years of service to the community and
surrounding areas. In March the Rock Island Railroad
service through Groom was halted.
Since 1902, Groom has grown into a prospering
town of the rural Texas Panhandle. Today, the future
does not look as bright for our city as it has in the past.
Groom does not have to die. As citizens, it is time
that EVERYONE begin thinking of ideas that will help
the city overcome the problems it has suffered, so that
the future will once again be a good one.
The mayor and city commissioners are searching for
ideas concerning the future of our city.
Anyone with suggestions, slogans or ideas for
advertising projects on billboards, bumper stickers, or
community improvement projects is asked to contact
City Hall at 248-3611. An open town meeting will be
held, if YOU the citizens show enough interests in
