schedules
ordination
Ordination services for Keith
Hassell are set for 7pm Friday at
Grace Fellowship Church A
graduate of Oral Roberts Univer-
sity, Hassell will assume the senior
pastor position at the Rusk church
Pastor Mike O'Bannion will con-
tinue as an associate pastor and will
be involved in evangelism Also,
Pastor Vernon Hedge continues
with his duties as associate pastor
Participating in the ordination
service will be area ministers and
representatives from the Church on
the Rock at Rockwall
The public is invited to attend this
special service at the church
United Methodist leaders from
across Texas declared their inten-
tion last week to repulse efforts to
use the state government's current
financial problems to introduce
legalized gambling
Some two dozen of the church's
leaders met last week on the
Southern Methodist University
campus in what amounted to a
council of war against an "in-
vasion" of national gambling in-
terests that are joining with local
promoters in an attempt to legalize
gambling in Texas.
Although United Methodists are
known for diverse opinions on many
issues, on this one the group quickly
reached a consensus: the church
believes that legalized gambling
hurts people and damages the
fabric of society and that it does not
provide a responsible means of
financing state government
The group was called into being
by the four United Methodist
bishops who are the spiritual
leaders of the more than 800.000
United Methodists in Texas
In addition to naming church
leaders to the task force the bishops
have pledged to raise more than
$100,000 to underwrite the effort,
said the Rev James A Mayfield. a
superintendent of the church's
Austin District and chairman of the
task force
Mr Mayfield said plans, are in
place for United Methodists to work
cooperatively with the Southern
Baptists and Assemblies of God in said "We are getting good
the state, "and we hope some others cooperation and we are going to
will join us." have the human and financial
"We're all in this together," he resources to follow through."
