Becoming district attorney
for any county in Texas would
nevei be considered an easy
task However. newly elected
123rd Judicial District Attorney
John Walker has the doubled
responsibility of overseeing
cases for both Panola and
Shelby countyies.
After spending his first two
days as DA representing the
state in 22 cases before the
grand jury, Walker talked about
his priorities for the office, and
what he hopes to accomplish
“What we hope most for is to
make the rate of disposal (of
casesi equal the rate of
indictment,” said Walker, “We
want to have better continuity
in calling cases to trial and
settling them ”
He hopes to achieve this by
having cases prepared so that
each grand jury will be fully
informed He also wants to
provide enough time to present
the cases properly
One of the greatest problems
Walker sees ahead is the dual
county district and its ever-
growing caseload “In Panola
County there are approximately
30 peace officers. In Shelby
County the number is about the
same Sixty officers enforcing
various iaws, making arrests,
and there is one judge and one
prosecutor to handle the
ensuing cases.
'The situation in Center with
the drug bust is tin example In
one day, 60 indictments were
brought You can see how that
would affect the prosecutor's
duties "

district also concerns Walker.
“The bi county district was
created on the basis of
population, not the rate of
arrest Panola and Shelby, even
with their current population,
have criminal activity in-
creasing beyond the norm
The crime rate here is equal to a
population much larger, but
without that “magic number",
this is the situation we have to
face.”
A difficult job, but one that
Walker faces with confidence.
He doesn't claim to expect any
miracles, just a constant effort
at achieve some realistic goals
“You take the tip of the
iceberg,” Walker said, “first
you take the cases that are most
prominent and annoying un-
derstanding that there are
many others waiting."
