Carthage came across with the ty-

Rick McGaruh came through, steal-

The squeeze attempt was missed, and

Both runs scored by the Mavericks

Carthage opens the Kilgore tourna-
ment this weekend with Longview.
It was unfortunate for the Carthage
Bulldogs Tuesday that their game
with the Pine Tree Pirates was ruled a
no-contest as darkness caused the
game to be stopped, with no winner
declared
But the momentum could have
pushed the Bulldogs over the top, as
they had come from a five point
deficit to tie things in the top of the
fifth at 5-5.
David Stacy had a chance to put the
Bulldogs on top with two out in the top
of the fifth, but a sparkling defensive

former head coach of the Dallas

mented following the game. “We did
the best we could do. Our defense was
as stong as it could be, but we let a few •
too many things go on offense.”
But both teams struggled in par-
ticular areas and the results were
anything but smooth sailing
And smooth sailing is obviously a
thing of the past for the CHS girls as
they were forced to play from behind
for the majority of the contest.
After Carthage roared out to a 12-4
lead, the Lobos began their march
and steadily climbed back into the
game, taking the reins early in the se

things began to look bleak for the
Lady'Bulldogs, as Levelland strung
their once-small lead to eight points at
42-34.
But that was as wide as the margin
got, as Carthage mounted a scoring
drive of 10 consecutive unanswered
points, which gave them a 44-42 edge
two minutes into the fourth period.
• And,yes, many hearts were throb-
ing before this thriller found its end.
The fourth quarter alone contained
four ties and four lead changes with
no deficit greater than four.
But, despite all the hoopla of that
final quarter and overtime period, the
Lady Bulldog’s most important
gesture could very well have come in
the first five minutes of the ball game.
For, the 12-4 lead they jumped out to

trouble throughout the first half, as

time and five extremely critical free
throws. She was Carthage’s leading
scorer in the three minute overtime
with three points.
Patricia Jones did not have one of
her more sparkling performances but
came through with 14 points and was
good for the critical assist on Hough's
game tying shot.
Hough said it was “all this girl right
here,” as she embraced Jones who
said “No, you were beautiful.”
When asked how the play developed
inside. Hough replied, “It just hap-
pened. There wasn’t time to think, it
just happened.”
Jones started the overtime period
with a 10-foot bank shot at the 2:52
mark to put Carthage up 58-56, but
Levelland wasn’t through either.
Their 5-11 sophomore post Darla
Isaacks banged the front end of a one
and one and the Lobos followed with a
rebound which Annie Davis promptly
converted into a layup to give
Levelland a 59-58 edge.
At the 1:46 mark, Bryant banked
one over a defender to regain the lead
but Davis countered with a pair of
charity shots
Jacobs then scored three con
secutive points while winding the
clock down to 18 seconds and the lead
was up to 63411. As the Lobos drove
down the court in an effort to tie,
guard Lisa Longstond misfired an
outlet pass and the ball fell harmless-
ly out of bounds with 11 seconds show-
ing.
Edwards was then fouled, sank one
of two free throws, and that was
enough, even though Isaacks hit from
the side at the buzzer.

it.
The Carthago Lady Bulldogs

pressure, but a clutch last-second
bucket from reserve wing Helen
Hough went off as if the ladies faced
such pressure every day.

the left side of the glass that saved
Carthage in regulation time, and a

on the dock and tied the
game at 56-56.
After Levelland scored twice in a
row to take a 56-54 lead, the Lady
Bulldogs found themselves needing at
least two points desperately but they
had only 30 seconds to get them.
Margaret Edwards brought the ball
downcourt and passed off quickly to
Patricia Jones. Jones could find no
open shot, so she winged a pass to
Hough, who was maneuvering across
the lane. .
Hough got out of the lane, rounded
the corner and shot over the outstret-
ched arms of a Levelland defender for
the tying points
“I knew we could win it right then,”
said head boss George Cox. “We had
that surge of momentum coming from
behind like that and I knew we could
get ahead and stay ahead."

strings of eight unanswered points
Foul trouble plagued the Lady
Bulldogs throughout the contest and,
before the half was up, both Vicki
Wade and Shelia Bryant, Carthage’s
major inside threats, had three big
fouls looming before them. Wade did
eventually foul out midway through
the fourth quarter but the mass of
mishaps hurt the Bulldogs’ reboun-
ding game immensely
“I think our fouls hurt badly on the
boards," said Cox. "Our boards
weren't nearly as strong as they can
be.
“But offensively I feel the key to
this game was that we never forgot to
go in with the ball. We weren’t ten-
tative. We never hesitated, even when
we were down.”
Shelia Bryant was phenominal
underneath offensively, reeling off 12
points in the first half. She also block-
ed two shots, but had a couple of her
own blocked too.
The Lady Bulldogs had a chance to
take a Jour-point lead in the second
period when Weese was whistled for a
technical foul but the normally
steady-handed Edwards missed both
free shots and the potential momen
turn builder backfired as Levelland
went on to take a four-point 30-26
halftime lead.
Lesa Jacobs at point guard was
outstanding in the second half, driving
and grinding for all 13 of her points.
Jacobs, who averaged only four
points per game during the year, ex-
ecuted the fast break and solo drives
to perfection, either sinking a bucket
or drawing a foul each time. She came
through with four layups, one in over-
