It had been nearly 40 years since
most members of the 495th Quarter
master Depot Co had seen each
other, but thanks in part to the efforts
of a Panola County man, 15 of them
got together this past weekend for a
reunion
James -Bid' Nutt of Gary hadn't
seen most of his old Army buddies
since those days in the islands of the
Pacific during World War II That
was entirely too long for a group of
men who had spent 10 months training
together and then several years island
hopping during the war
The idea of a reunion evolved when
Nutt and his former first sergeant.
Ronal Brock of Bedford. Ind , ex
changed Christmas cards for a couple
of years it was natural that Nutt
would he one of the ones to foster such
an idea for many of the 97 enlisted
men in the unit had seen him as a
father figure during those try ing war
time days
During the Labor Day weekend of
1981. Nutt and another member of the
unit went to Indiana where they
visited several days with Brock and
Dewey Chenault other members of
the unit who also h\ ed in Bedford
That's when the idea of the reunion
really began to bloom
Last weekend some 15 of the
enlisted men traveled to long view for
the three-day meeting that was held
at the Holiday Inn there Folks came
from Florida, South Dakota. West
Virginia Indiana and other states for
the meeting in Texas
The get together began Friday with
an informal gathering and then Satur
day there was a more formal banquet
complete with speeches on Sunday
morning the reunion closed out with a
breakfast and memorial service,
where deceased members of the unit
were recognized
Brock said that after nearly 40
years it was impossible to locate all
the members of the unit but about 40
were accounted for Next year they
hope to find a few more, with a
meeting planned for Southern Indian.)
at that time
Several of the group came to Panola
County after the Longview meeting to
visit with Nutt and on Monday toured
the county
The first sergeant was one of the
group visting here Since the service
he has been an equipment supervisor
for Indiana Rell Chenault the other
member of the group from Redford
works as a stone planer in an opera
tion that cuts stones for large building
projects
Also visiting Nutt was Harry Foster
of Wellsburg. W Va Foster worked in
a steel mill before retiring and since
has been a civil service police com
missioner in his West Virginia
hometown
One of the benefits from the reunion
was that many of the wives of the Ar
my pals got a chance to get to know
one another
Those attending the meeting includ
ed Buster Barker of Boswell Okla
Homer Boone of New Port Richey.

Phoenix Ariz Chenault Manin
