—How Miss Mattie Middleton, sec-
retary of the Social Service Bureau
turned detective—by accident—the
other day is the story of a chase
that ended in the capture and jail-
ing of a stranger who claimed to
be deaf and dumb.
The man induced a county offi-
cial to make out an affidavit about
his condition, which the out of
towner signed, and took on his
rounds, as he solicited funds. Ac-
cording to his sworn statement, he
•was deaf and dumb and trying to
get through college.
On his funding tour the soloc-
itor happened to walk into the of-
fice of the bureau secretary, who
so often has urged that the pub-
lic investigate chanty cases before
