Those home seekers, who landed
with Smith and Newport, firmly
intrenched themselves in their new
surroundings, by clearnig away
the trees and by building their
own little log huts, which were
I the forerunners of our spacious
| mansions of today. Land was plent-
I iful for the asking. The resources
I of the new world were numerous,
I and the returns from their toils
I were beautiful. There were idlers
I and loafers in the Jamestown col-
I ony just the same as we have
I them today, but there happened
I to be a man among them who
I was a demon for work. Capt. John
I Smith was the man, and he said:
I “He who does not work shall not
I eat.” Of course that policy got re-
l suits. A loafer’s bread basket
I doesn’t have to be empty long until
’he gets a shuffle on; and so it
11 was that Smith turned the trick.
As thousands of colonists came
I to America, they gradually took
I the land from the Indians and
pushed him westward until they
were finally dispossessed of then-
native heritage by the greed and
land hunger of their white broth-
ers. The possession of land has
been held a fascination for the
builders of America. When a man
secures some of God's fertile earth
and builds himself a home upon
it. whether it be of logs, brick,
| or stone, he begins to feel a spirit
I of independence and to develop
I a spirit of liberty that gives him
j a feeling of security which finally
becomes a passion. Of such was
our country made, and home own-
ers we must have, if we hope to
enjoy the liberty and to maintain; ;

the courage of our forefathers at
Plymouth and Jamestown.
Every man deserves a comfort-
able home upon a piece of land
he can call his own. But does he
have it?) Can he have it under
our present economic system of
high taxes, heavy mortgages, and
high interest rates. Something
must be done, my fellow country-
men, to re-establish the home
owner, lest he be reduced again
to logs, ( without the land and
without the “liberty of our pioneer
brothers. “Home, Sweet Home”
means little to the man who sings
it, while: his place of abode is
owned by another who keeps the
"first lien" sign forever dazzling-
before his eyes. Give him a lift,

ft is not enough to have up-to-the-minute clothes and a knowledge of the models best suited to one that
constitutes the well-dressed woman, according to the doctrines of the experts who recently lectured at the
Corel fashion clinic, sponsored by Harper’s Bazaar at New York. Of prime importance to the woman whe
would remain in the front rank of the fashionable is the need for co-ordination between her clothes, figure,
bair and make-up. The course, given at the clinic for fashion buyers, included lectures by experts ineverg
department of the style mogul’s and beautician’s art. Not only were there displayed the latest fashions foe
enilady, but there were also masters of vogue to show milady how they should be worn. Care of the hair
eritb methods of wearing it to the best advantage, was also carefully expounded and the important question of
ammke-up explained by past masters of the art. Above at left is one of the lovely gowns exhibited. It is of
white silver velvet, trimmed on the bias with silver fox. Note the flat diaphragm and the ultra-smart high
meckline. At right, Miss Katherine Wilson, noted stage actress, is shown as she gave a few pointers in th®
mprt of how and where to apply cosmetics, using a figure head for the demonstration. The purpose of the
wllnie is to impart, through fashion buyers, the essentials of being well-dressed to women who live far fro*
the style center of New York and Paris.

Land, Logs and Liberty.
All aboard for America! Should
you have been svanang on Eng-
land’s wave lashed shores on that
April morning of the year 1607,
would you have answered that
clarion call and boarded a tiny
sail boat with Christopher New-
port and Captain John Smith,
and set sail across a stormy sea
for a strange land, beset with
countless dangers? The members
of that little expedition sent out
by the London Company, made
history never to be forgotten.
They formed in America the first
permanent English settlement, and
from it sprang hope and courage,
the factors which built this won-
derful country of ours. Why did
those intrepid adventurers launch
such an undertaking, in the face
of so many hazards? Evidently
they had well grounded purposes
for coming to an unknown land.
Some came seeking adventure,
some came seeking a fortune,
while others came seeking homes,
yet all possessed the spirit which 1
made and has maintained Ameri-
