Rev. John Moder, Uni-
versity President, asked
her to “serve in the capac- '
ity of vice president” after i
Carey’s resignation. .
Rodgers holds the posi-
tion for an undetermined
period of time. “I will wait
to do what’s best for St.
Mary’s,” she said. “I was
very happy in the Dean of
Students role and I did
beneficial things for the uni-
versity."
Karen Ditzler, Director of
Residence Life, has been
named Associate Dean of Stu-
dents. “We confer on many
issues together,” Rodgers said.
Lisa McDougle has been

A New Student Induction ceremony on Friday, August 20 at 5:00 p.m. in Guadalupe Chapel
welcomed incoming freshman into the St. Mary's community. Faculty, staff, and returning

She hopes to continue en-
hancing existing leadership
development programs, to
implement a student Organi-
zation Leadership Series, and
to offer a leadership course in
the spring of 1993.
“The actions of an organiza-
tion on and off campus rep-
resent the institution. We
want to help organizations
make decisions by training
their leaders at these work-
shops,” she said.
Rodgers hopes to better
advertise community ser-
vice opportunities for stu-
dents and student groups.
. “We want to bridge the
gap of communication be-
tween all areas of the insti-
tution. Oneofthe ways we
quite quickly, and it now feels
like a good decision.”
Signs of the expansion in-
clude the University Center, a
project Carey fought for from
the beginning of his term, and
five residence halls (Lourdes,
Frederick, Donohoo, Flores,
and Adele).
Carey arrived eleven years
ago, two weeks after the ap-
pointment of Dan White, the
vice president of Financial Ad-
ministration. White praised
Carey for his commitment to
service.
It was not difficult to see
that he really wanted to serve

others,” said White.
Operations Coordinator Ann
Karam spoke of Carey’s most
profound influence — his stu-
dent service orientation. “He
instilled the attitude that we
need to put the students’ needs
first ... and it permeated the
department.”
White spoke of Carey’s
“keen” interest in the develop-
ment of the student. “As his
job evolved, he (Carey) began
to emphasize that the work
was to develop the student
through leadership programs
and residence hall programs,”
said White.
He added, “Over the years
we have done some amazing
things to improve the resi-
dence halls ... they are in in-
credibly better shape than 10
years ago, and Dan (Carey) is
primarily responsible for it.”
Carey’s longtime assistant,
GloriaHanna, also praised his
work. “All I know is Student
Development came a long way
under his direction,” said
Hanna.
Carey considers the future
of St. Mary’s to be much
brighter than when he arrived.
“We had enrollment and fi-
nancial problems in 1981. But
now we’ve been able to attract
more students and we’re able
to keep them, namely through
the efforts of the retention com-
mittee.”
On Tuesday, July 28, then-
Vice President of Student De-
velopment Daniel Carey an-
nounced that he was leaving
St. Mary’s effective August 14
to accept the same position at
। St. Louis University.
Carey’s surprise departure
marked the end of an eleven-
year reign which saw wide-
spread expansion of his divi-
sion, formerly known as Stu-
dent Services.
Carey’s decision to leave
came suddenly. “One month
ago,” said Carey on July 28, “I
did not think that, even if of-
fered the (St. Louis) job, I
would leave St. Mary’s. But
I ‘ everything came together
