In an odd bit of time travel, rapper Jay-Z is
collaborating with British rock gods The Beatles,
despite the band's breakup in 1969 and two
deceased members.
The mad scientist behind this odd coupling is
Brian Burton, a.k.a. DJ Danger Mouse, who
remixed Jay-Z's recent The Black Album using
samples entirely from self-titled Beatles 1968
classic known as "The White Album."
The result is The Grey Album, a surprisingly
fresh, eccentric and innovative work that
respects both artists while allowing Danger
Mouse to show his skill as a DJ.
The Beatles and Jay-Z might appear to be on
opposite ends of the musical spectrum, but the
truth is, they have more in common than you
may think.

"Aesthetic" show the 80's Iron
Maiden metal influences on the
band. Waggoner is the equivalent
now to what Steve Vai, Randy
Rhodes, and Eddie Van Halen
were in their prime.
The combination of the tracks
"Reaction" and "(Shevanel Take
2)" show their softer, gentler side.
Tired of almost every hardcore
band having the same "chugga
chugga" sound? Then boy, do I
have something to show you!
Hailing from North Carolina,
Between the Buried and Me is the
long: they come right back with a
right hook to the jaw with "Ad a

The best tracks include the pumping "99
Problems," where Jay-Z raps over a blazing riff
from "Helter Skelter," effectively blowing away
any other rap-rockers who don't have a clue.
The haunting piano riff from "While My
Guitar Gently Weeps," propels "What More Can
I Say" to another level of poignancy, and
"Mother Nature's Son" is brilliantly combined
with the biographical "December 4th," for a
thoughtful look at Jay-Z's life.
The album doesn't always work, but it's
imaginative and takes the game of homemade
remixes to the next level.
Hopefully, The Grey Album will inspire some
hip-hoppers to pick up The Beatles, and some
Beatles fans to turn up Jay-Z.
Here's to the next crazy mash-up.
