A Cherokee County woman is
dead and her husband charged with
first degree murder.
Buford Hodges has been charged
with the alleged beating death of his
wife, Joyce Hodges.
Sheriff Jimmy Dickson said his
office received a call at 8 a.m. Mar-
ch 1 from the woman's daughter in
Houston. The caller stated she had
called her mother and the suspect
told her that her mamma had died.
Deputy Mike Daniels was dispat-
ched to the home in the Enterprise
community. He later called Sheriff
Dickson and Chief Deputy Don An-
derson. After investigators deter-
mined the evidence and the
suspect's story allegedly didn't
match up, Peace Justice Archie
Cook ordered an autopsy.
The suspect voluntarily came to
Rusk and the district attorney's of-
fice and the sheriff's department
decided there was enough evidence
to justify the murder charge.
The autopsy preliminary infor-
mation revealed that the woman
allegedly died of severe internal in-
juries and injuries to the head.
Hodges is being held in the
Cherokee County Jail in lieu of
posting $3,000 bond.

Tickets to the dinner event are $6
per person and are available at the
Commission's office in the
Jacksonville post office building on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays or via mail sent to the
Commission at Post Office Box
1128, Jacksonville, Tex., 75766.
Tickets ordered by mail will be
mailed to those making reser-
vations not later than noon of April
19. No tickets will be available at
the door April 25 because of the
caterer's requirements, Mrs.
Taylor stressed.
The Commission began the an-
nual event six years ago to bring
together members of all the history-
related and patriotic organizations
in the county for a yearly emphasis
on Texas history. After two years,
the dinner had to be moved from
First United Methodist Church in
Rusk to the Lon Morris College
facility because of the increased at-
tendance. As members of historical
commissions and groups in neigh-
boring counties have begun atten-
ding the event it has taken on more
than a single-county tone, the
chairman said.
