shows us the contrasting climates
with the Thermal Wonders of Roto-
rua, geothermal steam bores, mud
pools, geysers, waterfalls; we’ll also
see the spring thaw overpower win-
ter in the high country.
In New Zealand, native wildlife is
abundant, colorful and distinctive.
In this film, Foster introduces us to
such oddities as the primeval tuatara
reptile and the flightless kiwi bird.
The Takahe, thought to be extinct,
and the Royal Albatross, along with
the world’s largest sea bird, seen in
flight will be just a few of the many
rare and unusual creatures featured
in Amazing New Zealand.

stars complemented the evenings’
observations. Lnfortunately, the on-
lookers were not able to see Haley’s
Comet after several diligent attempts
by some to locate it. Much patience
was needed when standing in the
lines at the campground’s showers
(75c for 5 minutes). Since many
other people resided in the Rio
Grande Campground, long lines and
waits of up to thirty minutes were
not uncommon.
The S.E.L. party was very fortunate
that the weather cooperated splen-
didly. Everyday was exceptionally
sunny. During the nights was when
the temperatures dropped to frigid
levels. However, everyone had warm
sleeping bags and extra blankets to
comfortably withstand the cold.
Sunday arrived and so did the
group’s time to leave Big Bend
National Park. By about 8:30 A.M.,
everything was packed up and every-

AMAZING NEW ZEALAND, a
travel film produced and narrated by
Grant Foster, one of New Zealand’s
top cinematographers, will be pre-
sented at the Opera Lab Theatre on
the University of Texas Campus on
Thursday, February 20th at 7:30.
This is the fourth film in the “Bringing
the World to Austin” series sponsored
by The Arts Exchange, a non-profit
arts services organization, interested
in bringing new forms of cultural
entertainment to Texas.
The California-sized New Zealand
has often been described as a “world
in miniature,” and “a great Pacific
farm.” It has 3 million people and at
least 60 million sheep. No other
country can provide such an extra-
ordinary variety of scenic beauty in
such a small space. Foster will take
us through this contrasting country,
from Auckland, the Gateway to New
Zealand, to the Old Gold Town of
Okarito, to the Glow-Worm Caves,
to Volcanic Mountains; Foster also

Along with daily hikes, other activi-
ties kekpt the group occupied. Some
went to the hot springs located along
the Rio Grande River four miles
from the campground. Those that
visited them comfortably sat in the
incredibly warm water as they
watched the active Rio Grande flow
alongside the springs. Another popu-
lar site along the river is Boquillas
Canyon. Those that visited it enjoyed
the sights of the Rio Grande’s waters
that curved between the immense
canyon walls. Some climbed the enor-
mous sand dune”(height: about 150
yards) located on the U.S. side. To
state that the ascension of the “dune”
was difficult would be a drastic under-
statement (just ask somebody who
climbed it). A third favorite spot is
situated on the Mexican side.
Boquillas del Carmen, Coahila is a
small village located about one half
of a mile from the Rio Grande.
There is no bridge transversing the
river. To go to Mexico one may pay
a nominal fee to be taken across on a
canoe, or one may walk across the
international boundary - if one finds
a shallow spot. Some S.E.L. tourists
decided to cross in the latter manner.
The risings of November’s full
moon were watched in the evenings.
The hikers would climb a small hill
that was nearby the base camp to
watch the striking spectacles of the
clear, night skies. Numerous shooting
