Benefit Bike-A-Thon slated
Riders for the Saturday, May 12,
St. Jude Children's Research Hos-
pital Wheels For Life Bike-A-Thon
are asking Rusk citizens to pledge a
contribution for each mile they ride.
Every mile the bikers go earns
money, bringing us closer to a cure
for cancer. The life-saving study of
childhood cancer at St. Jude lias
become critical to children all over
the world.
The ride starts at Texas State
Railroad park at 10 a.m., May 12.
Each rider gets a lap card at regis-
tration. Every time riders pass the
checkpoint, their card is initialed.
At the end of the ride, it will be
checked and signed to show that the
rider has earned what the sponsor
pledged. Riders return to sponsors
to collect pledges. "When asked to
sponsor a rider, please respond gen-
erously," said Gladys Dotson, coor-

John Eric Berry, three years,
announces the arrival of a baby
brother, Wesley Adam, born Mar.

Mrs. Virgie English of Crockett
was a recent guest in the home of
her son, Harold English, his wife

Marisa Harris celebrated her fifth
birthday on Monday, Apr. 23. She
eqjoyed a family dinner in the com-
pany of her parents, Clifford and
Marily Harris and her grandmother, '
Mrs. Julia Harris. Following her

Mrs. Betty Brown of Lubbock was
an overnight guest on Thursday,
Apr. 26 in the home of her niece,
Nancy Largent. They visited with
her nephew, Frank Largent in
Tyler's Medical Center Hospital.

is planned
Plans for the upcoming Cherokee
Art League Show were made at a
league meeting April 12atthehome
of Corinne Moore at Alto. The show
will be held in conjunction with the
Sale Around the Square in Rusk.
Paintings should be submitted
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May
22 attheold Berry-Clay Buildingon
the southeast side of the square in
Rusk. Judging will take place Thurs-
day through Saturday, May 24-26.
This month's Artists of the Month
are Helen Miskell, who is showing
at SESCO; Corinne Moore showing
at First State Bank and DeLoyce
Hackler showing at Citizens Bank.
The nextmeeting ofthe art league
is 10 a.m. May 10 at the Rusk Cham-
ber of Commerce directors room.

Diann Norton
attends meet
Cherokee County Treasurer
Diann Norton took part in the 18th
annual County Treasurers' Semi-
nar at Texas A&M University, April
16-19. The training focused on the
theme "Each Treasurer is an Archi-
tect of the Future—It's Up to Me."
More than 30 speakers addressed
the seminar. Subjects ranged from
alternative funding for county
health plans to how to handle a
claim underworker'scompensation,
time management and media rela-
tions.
Concurrent roundtable discus-
sions also were a part of the pro-
gram with county groupi ng planned
by population size.
John Gilmartin, coordinator for
the V. G. Young Institute of County
Government, a part of the Texas
Agricultural Extension Service said
this training was the third to be
offered by the Institute this year for
elected county officials.
The county judges and commis-
sioners received training in Janu-
ary and the county and district
clerks in March.
People attending the seminar for
county treasurers participated in a
brisk paced three days of training,
as well as a banquet where enter-
tainment was provided by the Sing-
ing Cadets of Texas A&M Univer-
sity.
Joe M. Rothe, seminar program
chairman and an extension service
specialist with the institute, said
each treasurer who attended all
sessions was awarded 20 hours of
educational credit by Texas A&M
office of continuing education.
County treasurers are required
to complete 20 hours every two years
accoiding to state law, he explained.
The County Treasurers Association
ofTexas cooperated in planning and
implementing the training.
Kasey Miller and Gary Hudson were
accompanied by Earl and Brenda
Dominy as they eryoyed dinner at
Tyler's Pancho's Mexican buffet and
bowling. Jeremy is the son of Brenda
and Earl Dominy and Rex Woodruff.
A costume birthday party honor-
i ng the fifth birthday of Miss Marisa
Harris was held on Saturday, Apr.
28 in the home of her parents, Clif-
ford and Marilyn Harris. The hon-
oree, dressed as Snow White, wel-
comed Jordan Beard aB Zorro,
Ramey Beard as Dorothy from the
Wizard of Oz, Tara Daniels as a
Rusk Cheerleader, Jamie Transier
as a cowboy, Collin Carroll as a
clown, Lisa Corley as an Indian
Maiden. Scarlet Smith as Snow
White, Danielle Lade as a twirler,
Jeff Rozelle as a surfer, Kristen
Ross as a beachcomber, Jake Ocker
and Collin Lade as fishermen. The
children erqoyed a scavenger hunt,
a movie, refreshments and piñata
activities, Happy birthday.
Mrs. Sandra Goff was surprised
by friends and family on Sunday
afternoon in honor of her Apr. 29
birthday. The party, held at the
Gilchrist farm, was attended by her
husband, Bobby Goff, their sons
Bryan, Dale and Bobby Goff, Justin
Jones, Barbara Finch and her chil-
dren, Sabrina, Angie and Jeffrey
Davilla, Chris Delgado, David
Owens and Denise Bragg, all of
Rusk; Melissa Prater, Troy and

Jennifer and Nicole of Jacksonville,

Vina Horton of Dialville.
MR. AND MRS.LLOYD MEREDITH of Kingwood
announce the engagement and approaching marriage
of their daughter, Jodi Aline, to Charles Bret Nations.
Mr. Nation is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Nation of
Reklaw and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Rhea of Highlands.
Miss Meredith is a graduate of Westbury High School,
Houston and Stephen F. Austin State University.
She is employed as a speech therapist for the
Palestine ISD. Mr. Nation, a graduate of Rusk High
School is currently employed by the Rusk ISD. A
June wedding is planned in Kingwood.
New crisis 'hot-line' number in effect
The Cherokee County Crisis
Center has a new hot-line phone
number effective Apr. 15. The new
number is 1-800-657-2276 and is
available 24-hours daily for use by
battered women and their children.
Directions for using the hot-line
are as follows: On a tone-push but-
ton phone, dial 1-800-657-2276. A
computer will answer, punch in 355.
When computer answers again,
punch in the number being called
FROM. Wait for the beep and hang
up.
A volunteer from thee i a center
will immediately return the call.
This change in the number was
made to increase the area serviced
by the paging company and to bet
ter serve the residents of Cherokee
County.
