MOMENTS of TRUTH
§ By DR. BILL TINSLEY
3 Pastor, First Baptist Church, The Colony
John Henry Newman, a Catholic Cardinal of the last century,
was writing of King Saul’s faith. He said, "... when we look
for evidence of his faith, that is, his practical sense of things
unseen, we discover instead a deadness to all considerations
not connected with the present world.”
The same statement could be said of much of what is reli-
gious today. In our churches, when we look for evidence of
faith we find no practical sense of things unseen. Little is done
that cannot be explained simply in terms of business principles
and psychology.
In our individual lives there is a fear of abandonment to
Christ. Many refuse to tithe because they simply can’t see how
they can make ends meet. Of course, God knows exactly what
we make and exactly what we need. When our lives are or-
dered by faith we may find him trimming away boats, camp-
ing trips, and football games which were previously drawing us
away from his will, but if we would order our lives by the
scriptures, beginning with our budgets, we would gain a
“practical sense of things unseen.”

He has authored many important bills. In the last
session, for instance, he was co-author of the Estate
Tax Reform Bill which will allow many more
families to keep their farms and businesses in the
family instead of having to sell them to pay taxes.
