Computer courses offered
The JacksonvilleCollege Depart-
ment of Continuing Education will
offer a short course entitled "Com-
puter Applications" to the general
public beginning «Tan. 28. The
course involves hands on training
for beginners in using IBM com-
patible computers and will include
DOS commands, word processing
(WordPerfect) and data base appli-
cations (d-Base III +).
Classes will meet each Monday
from 6 to 9 p.m. in the C.R. Mead-

Rusk basketball
court action
exciting to fans
The Rusk Eagles Boys Varsity
Basketball team have some excit-
ing, district action coming up as
action continues on the court. Fri-
day, Jan. 11 the Three Eagle boys'
teams will play at Tatum. The
Eagles will be at home Tuesday,
Jan. 15 when they host Spring Hill.
Games on both nights begin at 5
p.m.
The EagleB had some action over
the holidays. They opened District
play Dec. 18 on the home court
against the Gladewater Bears. The
Bears prevailed 87-76. Rusk was
behind by three at lialftime and
only trailed 58-59 at the end of the
third period. Scoring for Rusk in-
cluded Reggie Maddux, 17; Tracy
Stewart and Chad Parrott, 16 each;
Chris Roberson, eight; Johnny Glen
Patterson, seven; Keith Crawford,
six; Donald Session, Four and Rod-
ney Simmons, two.
Dec. 27-28-29 the Eagles partici-
pated in the Neches Tournment.
Rusk opened play on Dec. 27 with a
59-36 victory over Slocum. Leading
the scoring for Rusk were Stewart,
18; Maddux, 16; Patterson, nine and
Roberson, six.
Rusk returned on Friday, Dec..
28 to play New Summerfield. The
Eagles lost the contest 67-57. Top
scorers for Rusk were Stewart, 22;
Roberson, 10; Simmons, seven and
Patterson, six.
The Eagles played for third place
on Saturday and lost by a ltine poi nt,
63-62, to Elkhart. Stewart led the
bcoring with 19 points and Maddux
added 13 points to the Eagle cause.
Rusk lost a district contest 67-46
to Sabine on Jan. 3 and fell to White
Oak 65-59 on Jan. 5.
Birthday party set
Daisy Beck will be honored with
a 75th birt hday party beginning at
1:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Cherokee
County Electric Cooperative. All of
her friends are invited to attend the
come and go party, hosted by her
family.

Joe Randall
Conservationist
is named
for county
Joe Randall, 32-year-old Na-
cogdoches native has been trans-
ferred to the Cherokee County Soil
and Water Conservation District
office in Rusk. He will serve the
Cherokee County office as a soil
conservationist.
Randall came to the Rusk office
from Bartlett, where he served in a
«¡miliar position. He is a graduate
of Nacogdoches High School and
Texas A&M University with a de-
gree in Agronomy.
In addition to his parents and
other relatives in Nacogdoches, he
has two daughters, Allison,3, and
Kelsey, 1, who reside at Jacksboro.
He is a member of the Sacred
Hearts Catholic Church, Nacogdo-
ches.
Kent Fowler
announces
sermon topics
The Rev. Kent Fowler, pastor of
the Pierces Chapel United Meth-
odist Church, will preach on
"Learning to Use Questions Effec-
tively" at the 11 a.m. Sunday serv-
ice as the Evangelism Training
Beries begins in the Sunday morn-
ing worship service. He will speak
on "Hiding Talents" at the Sunday
evening service.
Sunday school begins at 10- a.m.
under the direction of Pete War-
ren.
The Senior Adult Class, taught
was Jim Warren, will study "Main-
tain Doctrinal Soundness."
The Yo\ing Adult Clans will study
"Rising Above Anxiety." Karen
Fowler is teacher.
"Three Important Tools" is the
topic for James Pike, teach er of the
Junior Class.
Sherry Kothe will teach on "Je-
sus Chooses His Helpers" in the
Primary Class. $
The Effective Prayer Seminar
will continue at the 7 p.m. Wednes-
day service. This week's topic is
"Thine Is the Kingdom."

Church is located on FM 747 near
Lake Jacksonville.
Rusk Garden Club
enjoys Christmas
The Rusk Garden Club met for a
meeting and Christmas party on
Dec. 12. The meeting was held in
the beartifully decorated home of
Mr. and Mrs. Orvelle Graham. Mrs.
Robert Perry gave a program about
Christmas legends. There was a
short business meeting and gifts
were exchanged among the twenty
three members who were present.
Happy Birthday wishes are ex-
tended to Ara Pearman as she cele-
brates her birthday on Saturday,
Jan. 12.
The Rev. Newton Hambrick and
his wife Tutsie travelled to Wim-
berly on Monday where they will be
guests until Wednesday in the home
of their daughter Patty and Drake
Maples and their children Julie,
Nikki and Jacob.
Wallace and Mary June Gard
travelled to Athens on Friday where
they visited in the home of Glen and
Charlene Gard.

tended to Jeremy Booth as he cele-

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth King of
Deer Park, accompanied by their
three children were recent guests
for several days in he home of his
parents, Troy and Francis King.

tended to Miss Teresa Dyess as she
celebratedherbirthday on Wednes-
day, Jan. 9 and to Steven DyeRs as
he celebrated his birthday on Sat-
urday, Jan. 5. They were honored
by their parents, R.S. and Esther
Dyess with a family dinner on Sun-
day, Jan. 6. Ths dinner was attended
by 19 family members.
Mrs. Lorine Fannin was accom
panied by James Fannin, Ronnie
and Bridget Fannin and their son
Kyle as they travelled to Groveton
on Tuesday, Jan. 8 where they were
guests in the home of Ivor and Lee
Coy Smith.
Michael Castor and his sister,
Ashley welcome their baby sister
Felicia Paige as she made her en
trance on Dec. 28. Felicia weighed 7
pounds and 1 ounce and is 18 inches
tell.
The Baptist Women's group met
for its first meeting of the new year
in the home of Mrs. Mildred Young
on Monday evening, Jan. 7. A buffet
supper, call to prayer and devotional
on "Finishing the Task" was en-
joyed by five ladies.
Kevin and Sherry Lankford of
Blythville, Arkansas, accompanied
by their children Bryan and Brit-
tany have been guest for several
days in the home ofhis moth' r,Mrs
Gladys Moake. They also visited in
the home of her párente, Brenda
and David Petty of Alto.
Debbie and Jamie Struhall trav-
elled to San Antonio recently whor -
they were guests in the home of
Mrs. Katie Struhall. Debbie and
Jamie brought home their sons
Jamie III and Terry who had been
guests in Mrs. Struhall's home for
several days

Felder of Hope, Arkansas and their

panied the Felders back to Alto
where they are resident of the Car-
riage park Nusing Facility.

his 54th birthday on Jan. 1. He

he recuperates form pneumonia in

day, Jan. 3 where they visited with
Mrs. Melba Ray and her daughters

Morgan.

continues to recuperate from a re-
cent injury. Justin underwent sur-
gery during the holidays and re-
injured his leg on Saturday.

Jan. 1. John was the New Year's
Baby for Nacogdoches County in
1982. He enjoyed a family dinner

graduated form Texas A & M Uni-
versity at. college Station. Kenneth
received his bachelor of science

Mrs. Jake Conway is reported
improved at Nan TraviB Hospital
following a stoke around noon Fri-
day.
After a fall last week, Rae Vick is
recuperating from a break in her
leg.
Progress is reported in the condi-
tion of Mm. Lola B. Lee, who suf-
fered a stroke last week.
Lone Oak
will have
new events
There was a meeting at Lone Oak
Church, Friday, Jan. 4, to re-estab-
lish the name as Lone Oak Baptist
Church and Community Center.
There will be no formal services at
Lone Oak at this time, but it is
planned to have special events, such
as singings and concerts, each
month. Lone Oak will also be avail-
able for such events as wedding
showers, weddings, baby showers,
and funerals. There will be nocharge
for these services, but donations
would be accepted. Anyone inter-
ested in using the church, or want-
ing to support Lone Oak in any way,
will n*«d to contact Joyce Spark-
man at 743-5348,Harold Sword at
743-5588, or Roland Rawls at 743-
5427.
The community is lookingforward
to having Homecoming the second
Sunday in June at the church this
summer.
Fridays night's entertainment
was a concert provided by Joyce
Sparkman, Nanette Irwin, and
Linda Starkey. The concert was
followed by a short business meet-
ing and then refreshments in the
fellowship hall.
