I’ve been to three great people-watching places in the
last few weeks. And the atmosphere, as well as the crowd,
is different in each place.
The Texas Stadium throng is festive; emotional; clean
and crisp, like the stadium. Everyone’s on holiday and
everybody came to have a good time. Designer jeans
abound. Ties are as commonplace as swimsuits;
binoculars and earphones are the fashion. Here, you can
jump up and holler anything you want to. Cheaper than a
psychiatrist. And win or lose, there’s always the tailgate
party for fattening up while the crowd thins.
Now the hospital waiting room is a “whole ’nuther ball
game.” Pea-green bare walls, plastic chairs, styro-foam
coffee cups. Everybody here is somewhere between
somber and solemn. Laughter, nervous small talk, and
pinched faces. Coats thrown in comers and newspapers
tossed beside dirty ashtrays. And yet a strange
comaraderie develops; a closeness beyond the proximity of
space. Where the cowboy crowd is gala, but faceless and
distant; here there is. inter-change, serious but warm.
An airport crowd, on the other hand, is devoid of any
emotion whatever. Everyone looks bored; no one is
laughing or crying or shouting or doing anything loud,
spontaneous, or rambunctious. The corridors are long and
dim; the carpets bare and dingy; the people weary and
worn. It’s all very sterile, very businesslike, very adult.
People are over-dressed, understimulated, and devoid of
