Recommissioning of the
massive ship brings her
back into active service for
the third time. First com-
missioned on Feb.22,1943,
she was decommissioned at
the end of World War II,
then brought back into

about the same as the cost
of a new, but much smaller,

Iowa will serve as the
predominant unit of a sur-
face ship action group,
either with a carrier battle
force or working as an
independent force. Iowa-
class ships also will fill a
void in naval gunfire need-
ed to support amphibious
operations and provide off-
shore support to U. S.
forces on beaches or in
coastal waters.
“Taking part in something
like this brings home the
purpose of the reserve
forces,” Gillett said. “In
the case of our unit, it
allows the Navy to draw on
a wide range of expertise
when needed, gives reser-
vists an opportunity to con-
tinue their training in a
productive way, and I guess
upholds the Navy tradition
of seeing new things and
places.”
