New readers of the 10-year-old Colony Courier
have an opportunity in this column to glance back a
few years and see what was happening in the area
“in yesteryear.”
Items in the column come from the news files of
the Courier and the old Little Elm Tid that began
covering the Colony before the first families moved
into the city’s Fox & Jacobs homes late in 1974.

said. “We’re anxious to
help our neighbors.”
More than 1,000 stores
from Tyler, Tex. to Spo-
kane, Wash, are participat-
ing in the campaign, with
about 25,000 employees as-
sisting in collection and
distribution efforts.
The company launched
its first canned goods cam-
paign in El Paso during the
1984 Christmas season.
That year, a handful of
stores collected enough
food to fill 800 grocery
bags.
The success of the orig-
inal campaign inspired
many Domino’s stores in a
four-state region to partici-
pate in a 1985 Christmas
canned goods drive. Last
year, 55 stores donated
several thousand bags of
groceries to needy families.
NINE YEARS AGO
There were 755 pupils at Carney Elementary School.
The school was designed to accommodate 800.

General Election. Hall was re-elected state repre-
sentative. Odle was elected county commissioner,

Domino’s Pizza, Inc.
stores have launched a
campaign to collect canned
food to help local needy
families at Thanksgiving
time. Once collected and
sacked, the groceries will
be personally delivered to
an estimated 600 area fami-
lies by store personnel.
Deliveries are scheduled
for Nov. 26, the day before
Thanksgiving.
The Colony effort is part
of a 16-state campaign,
which includes solicitation
of donations of turkey,
chicken, ham and other
food items from retailers
and distributors.
“With the help of our
Colony customers, we hope
to deliver 600 bags of
groceries to families in
need,” said Robert Gavitt,
local supervisor.
In the 16 participating
states, Domino’s Pizza
hopes to collect more than
60,000 grocery bags filled
with canned foods and froz-
en poultry. Customer don-
ations will be accepted until
Nov. 26 in the Colony.
The food then will be sorted
and distributed by delivery
personnel on Nov. 26. Ex-
cess donations will be dis-
