people officially arrived on our shores.

findings of the Minolta/Gallup Small Business Survey.
New readers of the 11-year-old Colony Courier
have an opportunity in this column to glance back a
few years and see what was happening in the area
“in yesteryear.”
Items in the column come from the news files of
the Courier and the old Little Elm Tide that began
covering the Colony before the first families moved
into the city’s Fox & Jacobs homes late in 1974.

Fall Is For Planting
Here's a fact that may take
root in your fall planting strat-
egy: September and October
are ideal times to plant trees.
That’s because the soil is
warm and the tree has plenty
of stored-up energy. These
conditions are perfect for
good root growth and a well-
established tree.

A national survey conducted
by the Gallup Organization and
sponsored by Minolta Corpo-
ration’s Business Equipment
Division finds that the major-
ity of small business leaders
are optimistic about the next
five years.
According to the survey of
1218 owners or top managers
of manufacturing and service
firms with fewer than 500 em-
ployees. 86 percent of the
firms with 20-499 employees
expect a sales increase over
the next five years and nearly
one-third expect to double or
more. Seventy-two percent of
the smallest firms, those with
fewer than 20 employees, also
expect a sales increase.
The survey also revealed that
the small business sector of the
economy, the source of most new
jobs in the U.S., expects better
success in adding new jobs over
the next five years than as re-

• Don’t stake the tree unless
it’s a weak-rooted dwarf fruit
tree or a tall, whippy speci-
men unable to stand alone. A
stake can cause severe bark
damage.
• Water the tree regularly.
Keep the soil moist, not
soaked; overwatering can
cause leaves to drop or
turn yellow.
