Those who aren’t poor
should count their blessings.
Nearly a quarter of all chil-
dren age five and under in the
United States are growing up
in poverty. In 1985, the pov-
erty rate for senior citizens
was 12.6 percent. Homeless-
ness increased 20 percent in
47 major American cities over
the winter of 1986, according
to a recent survey.

better for it. The Character I reier to
is in the handling of defeat as well as
victory. The team has lost three games
but none of them were blowouts. Bottom
line, the Cougars were in every one of
them and could have, with a few breaks
going their way, been 3 and 0.
I have been fortunate enough to walk
the sidelines during games and meet with
the coaches in the locker room after the
Cougs losses. I have seen the Character
of one player giving a shoulder to another
and the more experienced players taking
the younger, less experienced players
under their wings. . I have witnessed
first hand, the coaching staffs sincere
sense of pride in their players and the
players respect for their coaches.
This my friends, is what this “game”
is all about. The sharing, the matuaring
and the concern, at least in my book, is
more important than the final score. I
trust that all of you will show an equal
amount of character and continue to
support this team. They've got nothing to
apologize for. Winning or losing, they've
got Character and then some. They've
got CLASS.
State Comptroller Bob
Bullock says many new
services will become tax-
able Oct. 1 when the state's
sales tax rate increases
from 5.25 per cent to 6 per
cent.
“The tax change will
not only hit items which
are now currently taxed,
but a number of newly
taxable items and ser-
vices,” Bullock said.
The expanded sales tax
base was a major element
of a $5.7 billion tax bill
approved by the Legisla-
ture this past summer.
October 1 is also the
effective date of an in-
crease in taxes on cigarettes
going up from 20.5 cents
a pack to 26 cents a pack.
The Legislature ex-
tended the sales tax to
several broad categories
of services such as real
property services, includ-

The Cougars go 0 for 3 and what
once was a realistic chance at a
winning varsity season seems now to
be unachieveable. I mean let’s face the
facts, folks! The black and gold has only
had one offensive score against three fair
to mediocre teams. The big boys, ie.,
Gainesville, Allen, Denison and Boswell
are still to come. Regardless of the
record, however, there is something that
comes to mind that may be just a bit
more important than having a winning
record. Now I know that sounds like a
lot of hogwash but lets think about it for
a minute. The Cougars have Character.
I don’t mean to say that winning isn’t
important. It would be great for the
team, the school and for the community
if the Cougs were 3 and 0 instead of the
other way around; but I say it again, The
Cougars have Character with a capital
“C.”
They have made some costly mistakes
but don’t we all do that when we’re
learning. In fact, it’s often those costly
mistakes that make us grow and become
